BU’s Toven extends on-base streak to 20 games
ARLINGTON, Texas – Baylor softball dropped a tight midweek game 5-4 against UT Arlington on Wednesday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.
The Bears built an early three-run lead through the first two innings, but UT Arlington capitalized on a four-run fourth inning to flip the game. The Bears threatened late but were unable to find scratch again as the Mavericks held on down the stretch.
BU moved to 23-16 on the season, while UT Arlington improved to 17-19.
RUNDOWN
Baylor jumped out to an early lead, plating two runs in the first inning. Brooklyn Carter reached on an error to open the game and later scored on an Amber Toven RBI single. The Bears added another run on a passed ball to take a 2-0 advantage.
UT Arlington answered in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Bears extended their lead in the second inning, capitalizing on another Maverick miscue. Carter scored from first on a throwing error before Toven added a sacrifice fly, pushing Baylor's lead to 4-1.
UT Arlington responded with a decisive four-run fourth inning, turning the tables and capitalizing on Baylor mistakes. The Mavericks strung together timely hits and benefitted from four unearned runs to surge ahead, 5-4.
Baylor threatened late but was unable to break through against UTA reliever Maddie Furniss, who closed out the final two innings to secure the win for the Mavericks.
GAME NOTES
Baylor will resume Big 12 play with a trip to Lawrence, Kansas, to take on the No. 23 Jayhawks. Game one of the series is set for Friday evening at 5 p.m., with games two and three to follow at 2 p.m., Saturday and Noon on Sunday.
