SB Splits a Friday Doubleheader Against No. 23 Kansas
4/10/2026 7:36:00 PM | Softball
BU’s game one win was its first in Lawrence since 2022
Capitalizing on Jayhawk miscues in game one, the Bears notched a sixth win this season when trailing in the fifth inning or later. Game two was a pitcher duel as Peyton Tanner took the hard-luck loss after surrendering just two hits.
With the series even at a game apiece, the Bears aim to claim their first series in the Sunflower State since April 2022.
RUNDOWN
Game One
Baylor struck first in the opening inning as Leah Cran delivered an RBI double to score Sa'Mya Jones, but Kansas answered with a two-run double in the bottom half to take a one-run lead after the first.
The Jayhawks extended their advantage in the second, capitalizing on a Baylor error and timely hitting to go up 5-2.
Baylor responded with a pivotal third inning, taking advantage of four Kansas miscues to plate four runs. Gianna Gusman drew an RBI walk, Brooklyn Carter reached on an error that brought in a run, and Sa'Mya Jones added a sacrifice fly. Carter caused havoc on the bases, drawing a pickoff throw and a rundown, where Kansas threw the ball away, allowing the Bears to surge in front, 6-5.
Kansas briefly regained momentum with a solo home run in the fourth to tie the game at seven.
Down to its final three outs, Carter singled and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. Faith Piper delivered a huge RBI double to plate the go-ahead run that proved to be the difference.
Game Two
Game two turned into a defensive battle, with both teams held scoreless through the first five innings.
The best opportunity came in the fifth, when Kaygen Marshall doubled, and the Bears put runners on base, but Kansas worked out of the jam to keep the game tied.
The Jayhawks broke through in the sixth inning, using a leadoff double and a sacrifice fly from Kadence Stafford to plate the game's only run.
Peyton Tanner delivered a strong outing in the circle, allowing just one run on two hits across 6.0 innings, but Baylor was unable to solve Kansas pitcher Blakely Barber, who tossed a complete-game shutout.
