Bears bat around, score five in the top of the ninth to salvage weekend series at UC
The Bears (20-15, 8-7 Big 12) batted around and had each of the first five reach safely to start the final frame en route to putting a crooked number up. BU erased two previous deficits and never trailed by more than a run to claim the weekend finale over UC (24-14, 6-9 Big 12).
Freshman outfielder Brady Janusek had three hits, including a big two-run double in the top of the ninth, and was one of six Bears with multiple knocks on the day as Baylor racked up 15 total hits. Fifth-year senior right-hander Caleb Bunch (4-1, 1.08 ERA) got the win, throwing three scoreless on the heels of a gutsy start from senior southpaw Ethan Calder. Calder went 5.2 innings scattering nine hits and allowing just three runs with one walk and six strikeouts, battling his way through a 100-pitch afternoon.
THE RUNDOWN
Sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock sparked things early with a one-out double in the top of the first and stood 90 feet away from the pay station after a Janusek single. After an errant throw on a pickoff move, Riebock crossed the plate to put the Bears on the scoreboard first.
Cincinnati mustered just two hits off Calder its first time through the lineup, but an RBI triple and run-scoring single in the bottom of the third put the Bearcats in front, 2-1. BU couldn't cash in on Janusek's leadoff double in the top of the fourth, but Calder bounced back nicely in the bottom half of the inning with two more strikeouts in a 1-2-3 frame of his own.
Baylor knotted the ballgame in the top of the fifth as fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson started the inning with a double, his first extra-base hit since March 21. Kennett singled one batter later, and though a double play ball erased him, it also allowed Johnson to score and tie things up at 2-2.
Three-straight hits put UC back in front in the bottom of the sixth, 3-2, though Calder battled to record two more outs before exiting. He turned it over to fellow southpaw junior RJ Ruais who got a big flyout to minimize the damage and bring the Bears back up to the plate down by just a run.
In the top of the seventh, BU got its leadoff man aboard for the fourth-consecutive inning as redshirt freshman infielder Brytton Clements singled. Following Johnson's sacrifice bunt and Kennett's second knock of the day, Baylor had runners on the corners with one away for freshman outfielder Bo Caraway, who laid down a perfect RBI squeeze bunt to even the scoreline at 3-3. Back-to-back strikeouts went on to end the inning and keep things tied at the stretch.
Bunch came on with one on and nobody out in the seventh, but finished off a strikeout after entering mid-at-bat and induced two flyouts to put up a zero.
The top of the eighth featured a strange sequence, as two walks put Bears on first and second base with one out in the inning. A sharp liner to the shortstop off the bat of Clements was dropped and a force out was made at second base, and after the umpires conferred with both head coaches, BU had runners on first and second with two outs. Then, an infield single loaded the bases, but a screaming line drive by Kennett was snagged at short to end the inning without any runs crossing the plate.
Bunch sent it to the ninth still in a deadlock after his second scoreless inning of relief. That's when the Bears batted around and saw the first five reach safely in the top of the ninth to plate five runs and go in front, 8-3. Caraway started the rally with a leadoff triple, then scored on redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders' RBI single. Riebock doubled for the second time and then two runs scored on Janusek's shift-beating grounder through the right side that also went for extra bases. Clements added some insurance with an RBI single, then Kennett put the cherry on top with his third hit of the day to score another.
The Bearcats went quickly and quietly in the bottom of the ninth, as Bunch retired the side in order on just eight pitches to finish off the Baylor victory.
