BSB Walks-Off UTSA, 10-9, in 12 Innings

Bears score three runs in bottom of the 12th to come from behind and win
After squandering an early lead, the Bears (21-15, 8-7 Big 12) fought to hang on against the Roadrunners (25-12, 8-4 AAC) and send the game to extras. Though the visitors scored two in the top of the 12th, Baylor came roaring back with a three-spot in the home half to win it.
Redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong crushed a pair of home runs, including a game-tying two-run shot in the 12th off UTSA closer Sam Simmons, just the second home run he has allowed all season. Then, freshman outfielder Dylan Perez came through with his third hit and RBI of the night for the game-winner.
Fellow freshman right-handed pitcher Caldwell McFaddin turned in a gutsy performance to throw 2.1 innings after coming in in the 10th. Fifth-year senior closer Caleb Bunch was excellent again with two scoreless frames, his 13th scoreless appearance of the year, and junior righty Luke DeVasher got the win after recording the final out in the 12th.
THE RUNDOWN
UTSA jumped out to the game's first lead, putting up two unearned runs in the top of the first on a hit and two BU errors. But, the Bears responded immediately with three hits and four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to charge in front, 4-2.
Armstrong got things going with an RBI single, then Perez jumped all over a first-pitch offering for a two-run double to put BU ahead. Junior catcher JJ Kennett double in Perez to cap off the rally in the first.
Baylor added on with a run in the second on redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders' sacrifice fly. Then after UTSA plated one in the top of the third, BU answered right back as Armstrong launched his 13th home run of the season, a solo shot which made it 5-3.
Both sides went quiet in the fourth, then UTSA inched within a run in the fifth with a two-run single. Baylor padded its lead back to 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth as freshman outfielder Brady Janusek delivered a two-out run-scoring knock.
In the late stages, Bunch took over on the mound with two on and nobody out and a two-run lead in the eighth. After a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt, UTSA tied the ballgame with a sac fly and RBI single. From there, BU struggled to get much going offensively against the Roadrunner bullpen, but McFaddin matched it zero for zero as the game went on.
In the top of the 12th, McFaddin surrendered a one-out walk and handed the ball off to redshirt freshman right-hander Cayden Baker. On the first pitch Baker threw, UTSA recorded a go-ahead RBI single and pushed the scoreline to 8-7, its first lead since the first inning. After a walk, an infield fly and an infield single, a bases-loaded walk gave the visitors a two-run cushion and forced BU to go to its bullpen again, seeing DeVasher come on to record the final out of the frame.
In the home half, Janusek sparked things with a one-out single, bringing Armstrong to the plate as the tying run. On a full-count offering, Armstrong hammered a slider over the middle of the plate 411 feet to knot the game at 9-9.
Redshirt freshman infielder Brytton Clements kept the line moving with his third hit of the day, forcing a UTSA pitching change. Then, Clements took two bases on a wild pitch, sliding into third safely with a nifty swim move. That's when BU lifted Clements for a pinch runner in the form of senior Caleb Bergman, who scored on the Perez single that marked Baylor's first walk-off victory of the season.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On Dylan Perez taking advantage of his opportunity…
"You know, he's struggled to get in the lineup, but he's fought to get in the lineup. He wants to be in the lineup. This weekend, he had some really good at-bats when he got his chance to do it. He was very competitive. Tonight, he came up big early and came up big late, and I'm really happy for him. These are tough things for freshmen to do. He's never had to sit on the bench and fight his way through it like this in high school. For him to come through like that tonight was big."
Freshman OF Dylan Perez
On his day at the plate…
"I mean, it felt great. I've just kind of been preparing, you know, working every day and when you get your shot, you get your shot. And God's timing is always perfect, you know? So, I don't think I would have been ready until today to handle it, and today was the day, so it was really good. Feels great."
Redshirt Senior 1B Tyce Armstrong
On coming up in big moments…
"Yeah, I mean, obviously you think about it, but you have to try not to do too much and stay within yourself. And the only way to do that is to get a pitch that you can hit. And that's what I got, so I'm happy I did it."
