BU finishes with 30 wins for the 11th time in the last 13 seasons
AUSTIN, Texas – Baylor softball saw its season come to an end Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to No. 2 overall seed Texas in the NCAA Austin Regional at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
The Bears finished the season at 30-28 after advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons and battling through the elimination bracket with wins over Wagner and Wisconsin on Saturday.
Baylor hung with the Longhorns through the middle innings behind several standout defensive plays, but Texas used a pair of late home runs to pull away and secure the regional title.
RUNDOWN
Texas jumped in front early in the opening inning when Katie Stewart launched a two-run home run to left field following a leadoff single.
The Bears appeared poised to punch back in the bottom half of the first after putting runners at second and third with one out. However, after a replay review, Sa'Mya Jones was ruled out for interference on a throw to first, halting Baylor's scoring opportunity.
The Longhorns added another run in the second inning on an RBI single from Kayden Henry to extend the lead to 3-0.
Despite the early deficit, Baylor settled in defensively and kept the game within reach throughout the middle innings. Peyton Tanner worked around traffic repeatedly in the circle, helping limit Texas to 2-of-9 with runners in Scoring position, stranding nine total Texas runners through the first five innings.
One of the biggest defensive plays of the afternoon came in the top of the fourth inning, when Leah Cran snagged a line drive at first base before doubling off the runner at first to complete an inning-ending double play. The twin killing tied Baylor's single-season program record for double plays turned at 31.
Texas tacked on a run in the fifth before using three solo home runs in the sixth inning to extend the advantage to 7-0.
Baylor managed three hits in the contest, all by its seniors, including a sixth-inning double from Kaci West, but was unable to generate a late rally against Texas ace Teagan Kavan.
GAME NOTES
QUOTABLE
Glenn Moore on Sunday's game— "Obviously [Teagan] Kavan had a heck of a game. I don't think she even threw 80 pitches. We had a chance early to put a little pressure after they delivered the first punch. I was disappointed in the outcome of the play at first base. I'd like to see that again and see exactly what took place. I thought it was a bad throw there, but we had something going on there and that kind of squelched us and then from that point on it was pretty much all Kavan. She just dominated the rest of the game. But I'm really proud of our fight and proud of the girls for the season they had."
Kaci West on the team's mindset this weekend — "We just wanted to go out there and give it all we had. God blessed us to be here, and we trusted him with the results of the game. We wanted to compete and give it all we had, and that's all we can do. This weekend our saying has been one more. One more at-bat, one more pitch, we just wanted to get out there and keep fighting one more time. I think we did that this weekend, especially yesterday and today. I thought we did a pretty good job out there competing. I'm really proud of this team."
Brooklyn Carter on the future of the program — "I'm glad that they got the postseason experience this year. I think the freshman class now is very determined. They're fighters like Kaci said, and even the sophomores and juniors who are about to be seniors. Coach Moore recruits a lot of dogs, and I'm excited to see how that plays out next year."
