SB Rallies to Claim the Middle Game against No. 2 Texas Tech
5/1/2026 9:53:00 PM | Softball
BU’s five-run comeback was its largest since 2014
The Bears scored first, only to see Texas Tech reel off six unanswered runs to go up 6-1. From there, it was the Bears who punched back, with four in the fifth, and three more in the seventh, capped by a clutch pinch-hit single from Kaci West to make it 8-6. With Tech threatening one more time, Peyton Tanner came on in the seventh to close it out in the circle for her third save of the season.
The win was Baylor's first road win over a top-five team since beating No. 5 Texas in Austin in May of 2023. With the win and an Iowa State loss on Friday, the Bears officially clinched a spot in Oklahoma City for the Big 12 Tournament next week.
RUNDOWN
Baylor struck first, with a couple of balls off the wall as Brooklyn Carter got the inning started with a double and later scored on a Sa'Mya Jones base hit to take the 1-0 lead.
Texas Tech answered with a big third inning to grab momentum, thanks in large part to a three-run bomb off the bat of Jasmyn Burns for the second day in a row.
Trailing the Red Raiders 6-1 in the fifth, Kaygen Marshall delivered a solo home run to get Baylor back on the board, and just a few batters later, Brooklyn Carter followed with her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to pull Baylor within a single run.
Baylor nearly added two more, but Texas Tech's Mihyia Davis went over the wall to rob a two-run home run off the bat of Cran and preserve the Red Raiders' advantage.
In the seventh, Sa'Mya Jones and Amber Toven reached on a couple of infield hits to set the table. Jones came around to score on a ball off the bat of Cran, tying the game and setting the stage for the decisive moment.
With the bases loaded and the game hanging in the balance, Kaci West delivered one of the biggest hits of her illustrious Baylor career, driving in two runs as a pinch hitter to give the Bears an 8-6 lead.
Texas Tech answered with a run in the bottom half to cut it to 8-7, but Peyton Tanner came on in relief and shut the door, getting the final two outs with the tying run at third base.
