Armstrong and Janusek homer while Davenport fans career-high 12 batters in six solid frames
Davenport fanned a career-high 12 batters across six solid frames of work on the mound and got plenty of run support as the Bears (17-12, 6-4 Big 12) scored in five of the first six innings to separate from the Cougars (13-15, 4-6 Big 12). Redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong crushed his team-leading 11th home run of the year and freshman outfielder Brady Janusek came up a triple shy of the cycle in his four-hit, five-RBI night, both career highs.
Four Bears had multi-hit efforts as the team racked up 13 hits on the night. Davenport and freshman reliever Luke McLeod combined to strike out 13, marking BU's ninth double-digit punchout performance of the year.
The win is Baylor's fourth in a row in Big 12 series openers, its longest such streak since 2021. BU also improved to 7-1 this season in series openers.
THE RUNDOWN
Davenport set the tone with a pair of punchouts in the top of the first, then the Bears wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders led off with a single and scored on Armstrong's two-run blast that gave BU the lead after the opening frame.
BYU pulled one back in the top of the third with a solo home run, but Baylor countered instantly as Sanders tripled off the batter's eye and once again scored on a BU home run, this time from Janusek, to extend the green and gold's advantage to 4-1.
Davenport continued to cruise on the mound, striking out the side in the top of the fourth. Then in the home half, fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson singled in redshirt freshman infielder Brytton Clements, then also crossed the plate on Janusek's two-run double that extended the Baylor lead to 7-1.
The Cougars cut into the deficit with two runs in the top of the fifth, thanks in part to some BU defensive miscues, but once again the Bears answered back, loading the bases and plating a run on a balk which pushed the score to 8-3.
Once again, Davenport fanned the side in the sixth to cap off his stellar start and Baylor put up two more runs in the bottom of the inning as Clements singled in a run and later scored on junior catcher JJ Kennett's RBI base hit.
With a 10-3 lead, BU turned to its bullpen and the Cougars took advantage with single tallies in each the seventh and the eighth. However, Baylor responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the eight as Sanders doubled in Johnson and subsequently came around on Janusek's RBI single.
Junior left-hander RJ Ruais finished things off in the ninth with a scoreless frame, his 11th of the year and fifth in a row, putting a stamp on the 12-5 victory.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On Lucas Davenport's career night…
"His stuff is really good. He keeps ticking up. He's getting stronger. It's dominating stuff. Dominating fastball, dominating slider, dominating changeup at times. He's pretty good and it's fun to watch him pitch. It's fun to watch him compete right now. I'm proud for him."
On the way Brady Janusek has been swinging it lately…
"You know, he's so athletic. That's what you keep encouraging him to do. He's a worker and he wants to be really good. The thing I just say is, be athletic. Let it happen. Swing the bat. There's gonna be mistakes in there, there's gonna be some swing and miss, but man, when he puts a charge into it, it goes pretty good. And he's doing a nice job."
Freshman OF Brady Janusek
On winning another series opener…
"It's important for us. We've taken this mindset of 'it's Friday every day.' You know, we've been really good on Fridays. We've won the series opener, and now we need to continue that. So tomorrow's Friday and it's another series opener for us."
Redshirt Junior RHP Lucas Davenport
On his performance improving each week…
"It was all working pretty well, the sweeper, changeup, cutter. It's been good to build up, the boxing gloves are off and I'm going as long as I can. It's great to stay out there and compete. It's hard to lock in for 100 pitches, but you can lock in for one pitch 100 times, so I'm going from there."
WHAT'S NEXT
