Janusek continues hot streak with eighth homer of the season
The Bears (17-13, 6-5 Big 12) erased an early 3-0 deficit to tie the ballgame in the third inning, but couldn't overcome the Cougars' ability to add on late, as BYU (14-15, 5-6 Big 12) scored runs in five of the final six innings to pull away.
Freshman outfielder Brady Janusek homered for the second-straight game, moving his total to eight long balls on the year, the most among Big 12 freshmen and seventh nationally. Three Bears added multi-hit performances in redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong, fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson and junior catcher JJ Kennett.
BYU hit three home runs on the afternoon, each of which were solo shots that didn't travel more than 370 feet, but also took advantage of three BU errors on the day.
THE RUNDOWN
The Cougars got to Baylor starter sophomore right-hander Zack Wallace right away with three runs in the top of the first inning thanks to three hits and an error. Outside of a second-inning double by Kennett, the Bears were held quiet offensively until the bottom of the third when Janusek left the yard to put BU's first tally on the board.
Armstrong followed suit with a single and later scored on a wild pitch, then Johnson tied the game with an RBI single to pull the Bears even at 3-3 through three frames.
BYU quickly answered back in the fourth with a pair of solo home runs to go back in front at 5-3. After Baylor turned to its bullpen in the fifth, the Cougars added on with another run in the inning to make it 6-3. Redshirt freshman right-hander Brayden Bergman did well to minimize damage in the inning and strand the bases loaded in the fifth, then worked a scoreless sixth to keep BU within striking distance.
The Bears threatened in the home half of the sixth with two runners in scoring position, but left them there as back-to-back strikeouts to the top of the BU order squashed the run-scoring opportunity.
BYU hit its third solo homer of the day in the seventh to pad the lead at 7-3, then extended the advantage in the eighth with two more runs and tacked one more on in the ninth to move it to 10-3.
Armstrong smoked a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the ninth, but that would be all for the Bears in the inning as the Cougars evened the series.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the team's mindset going into tomorrow's rubber match…
"You play well, you have to move forward. You play bad, you have to move forward. If you get beat, you have to move forward. And that's what it is, but we still have an opportunity to win the series. If we win the series, we'll be happy with that. We had an opportunity to day to win it, but we didn't get it done. They tied it up and now tomorrow, we'll both have opportunities to win it. It should be a really competitive ballgame."
