Two-out runs cost Bears as UC clinches series with 8-0 victory
CINCINNATI – Baylor baseball was held scoreless at Cincinnati on Saturday, dropping an 8-0 contest to the Bearcats at UC Baseball Stadium in game two of the weekend series.
BU (19-15, 7-7 Big 12) could only muster five hits on the day and was bit by six two-out runs scored by the Bearcats (24-13, 6-8 Big 12).
Sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock was a bright spot offensively, recording his sixth two-hit game of the season and reaching base three times. Sophomore infielder Cade Dodson added a double and redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong reached safely for the sixth game in a row with a single for the Bears.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Zack Wallace recorded a season- and career-high six strikeouts, but was tagged for six two-out runs in the first five innings as UC took an early lead and kept adding to it. Redshirt freshman righty Brayden Bergman made his 10th scoreless appearance on the mound and lowered his season ERA to 3.60 as well.
THE RUNDOWN
UC struck first in the bottom of the opening frame, taking advantage of a pair of two-out free passes. An infield single and a fielding error allowed the first run to score, then an RBI single made it 2-0 after the first.
Wallace settled in and worked a 1-2-3 second inning with a pair of punchouts, then notched his third-straight strikeout to start the bottom of the third. But, another two-out, two-run knock for the Bearcats doubled their lead to 4-0.
After doubling his first time up, Riebock led off the top of the fifth with his second knock of the day, though he'd be quickly erased on a double play ball. The Bears threatened by loading the bases with two outs, including a double off the base of the right field wall from Dodson, but could not take advantage of a walk and UC error and left the bases juiced in the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Wallace tallied his season- and career-high sixth strikeout of the ballgame, but again Cincinnati struck with two outs after a single extended the inning and a two-run homer pushed the scoreline to 6-0.
A 6-4-3 double play, Baylor's 29th of the season, helped BU tightrope out of more danger in the sixth as UC loaded the bases with one out. But, junior right-hander Charlie Atkinson surrendered a pair of runs in the seventh after back-to-back bunts, an RBI double and an RBI single.
The Bears went down in order in the eighth and threatened to put a tally on the board in the ninth after Riebock was hit by a pitch and redshirt freshman infielder Brytton Clements singled, but a groundout ended the ballgame and gave UC the series.

On today's game…
"It's a two-game stretch where we've really struggled and it's disappointing. We've got to get back to being us and simplify this a little bit. These type of things happen in college baseball where you go through a rough period. We need to show up tomorrow and try to put these last two behind us. Everybody goes through this type of thing and we'll pick up the pieces and get going tomorrow."
