Bears score season-high 16 runs in midweek defeat of UIW
The Bears (13-11) showed off the bats with a season-high 16 runs on 16 hits, their ninth double-digit hitting performance of the season, including redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong's eighth home run of the year. BU had a six-run fifth inning and plated seven in the seventh to pull away from UIW (13-12).
Redshirt freshman right-hander Cayden Baker picked up his second win of the season with a personal-best 3.2 innings of work. Juniors Charlie Atkinson and RJ Ruais added scoreless appearances, while redshirt freshman Brayden Bergman worked his sixth scoreless outing of the year.
Redshirt senior right-hander Jake Kolkhorst made his collegiate debut at the Division I level and recorded the final two outs, ending the game with his first-career strikeout. Kolkhorst had redshirted as a true freshman in 2022, played two seasons of junior college baseball, then missed the 2025 campaign due to injury before finally making his debut on the mound.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor jumped out in front quickly with back-to-back singles by sophomore utility man Pearson Riebock and freshman outfielder Brady Janusek in the bottom of the first inning. The duo combined to swipe three bases in the frame and each scored runs to give the Bears the early 2-0 advantage.
A two-run homer for UIW evened the score in the top of the third, but BU answered right back in the home half on Armstrong's solo shot, his eighth of the year and fourth in a midweek ballgame this season, making it 3-2.
Baylor broke it open in the fifth with a six-run inning that included RBI knocks from Janusek, Armstrong, fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson and redshirt freshman infielder Brytton Clements, extending the lead to 9-2.
The Cardinals scored one in the top of the sixth and pulled within three with a three-spot in the seventh, but that's as close as it would get as Janusek once again sparked the Bears to a seven-run inning with an RBI single and his third stolen base of the night.
Freshman catcher Cash McDade delivered a two-run single, then Clements added another run-scoring knock and sophomore infielder Cade Dodson put the cherry on top with an RBI single to make it 16-6 once the seventh was over.
In the ninth, UIW plated one run as Kolkhorst finished the deal and put Baylor back in the win column.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the offense's aggressiveness…
"I give Coach [Jim] Blair and the guys credit for it, we took off running right off the bat. It needs to be part of our offense. We've got some speed, we've got the ability to do that, and if you can take advantage and move runners around, obviously good things happen. We scored 16 tonight, a season high, and got a whole bunch of guys in, had some really nice swings and at-bats."
Sophomore INF/OF Pearson Riebock
On the victory and the offensive gameplan…
"Everyone did their part tonight. The pitchers did their part and the hitters, through the lineup, a lot of hits and a lot of stolen bases. It was a fun game. We're a very athletic team and we know it's going to be a part of our game. Running the bases, hard 90's all the time, getting bunts down when it needs to be done. One through nine, most guys can all run so we've got to take advantage of that."
