Armstrong homers twice, Davenport goes 5.1 with six punchouts in victory
HOUSTON – Baylor baseball won its series opener at Houston, 6-2, on Friday night at Schroeder Park in Houston.
Redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong hit his ninth and 10th home runs for the Bears (14-11, 3-4 Big 12) to lead the way offensively. Meanwhile, redshirt junior Lucas Davenport worked a career-high 5.1 innings and matched his personal best with six strikeouts in earning his second win of the season.
Junior right-handed reliever Charlie Atkinson was also sharp, tying his season high with 2.2 innings of work before handing the ball off to fifth-year senior righty Caleb Bunch to close it down in the ninth.
Sophomore infielder Cade Dodson added a pair of hits and an RBI for BU out of the nine-hole, while the Cougars (13-12, 1-6 Big 12) allowed two runs to score on wild pitches and couldn't overcome the Bears' early lead.
THE RUNDOWN
Things were quiet early as Davenport and Houston starter Connor Udland traded zeros through the first three frames, but Baylor broke through in the top of the fourth as Armstrong sent his ninth home run of the season, a two-run blast, over the right-center field wall to put the Bears ahead, 2-0.
Davenport did not allow a hit until the 13th batter he faced with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, as he had seen just one over the minimum to that point. But, an inning-ending strikeout, Davenport's third of the night, squandered the threat for the Cougars.
In the top of the fifth, Baylor loaded the bases looking for more and chased Udland from the ballgame with one down in the inning. However, back-to-back strikeouts left the bases loaded for the Bears in the frame and kept things at 2-0.
Houston got its first runner into scoring position with a one-out double in the home half of the fifth, but Davenport worked around the extra-base hit to fan the side and move his total to six punchouts on the evening.
BU then manufactured a trio of runs on just two hits in the top of the sixth, as sophomore infielder Cade Dodson's two-out RBI double sparked a rally. A pair of wild pitches allowed Dodson and junior catcher JJ Kennett to score, giving the Bears a 5-0 lead.
Davenport's night came to an end in the bottom of the sixth after the Cougars got on the board with an RBI single, but junior reliever Charlie Atkinson minimized the damage with a pop out and a fly out to keep BU in front at 5-1 into the final third.
Armstrong left the yard for the second time in the top of the seventh, this time a solo shot that moved the scoreline to 6-1. Houston countered with a solo home run in the home half to cut it back to a four-run deficit, but that's all the Cougars would get as Atkinson and Bunch cruised the rest of the way to seal the series opener.

STAT OF THE DAY
10 – With two blasts tonight, redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong became the 11th Bear since 2012 to hit 10 home runs in a single season.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the team's performance tonight…
"We played good baseball and got a really well-pitched ballgame. Lucas Davenport gave us five-plus innings of really good stuff. Then, Charlie Atkinson followed him up with two and two-thirds and was fantastic. Between those two guys, they got us easily to the ninth and that was a great job to go out there with [Caleb] Bunch and get it done. Couldn't be happier with the pitching staff. I think we only gave them one or two free bases and that's going to win you a lot of games, it gives you a chance. We played error-free baseball and it was a good night."
Redshirt Senior 1B Tyce Armstrong
On hitting two home runs in his hometown…
"It's awesome. My parents got to come out and got to see that. Anytime you perform like that, it's a blast. It felt good today, I had a few good rounds in BP, but tonight was up there. 'Dav' gives us good outings every single time and the bats are usually pretty hot on Friday nights, we've just got to figure out a way to continue it into the next two days and I think we're going to be able to do that this weekend."
Redshirt Junior RHP Lucas Davenport
On how he felt going into tonight's start…
"It was good to go out there, compete for my team and get a win on a Friday night. You've got to focus on every pitch, throw with all you've got and see how long you can go. It was great to go 96 pitches and compete for the team."
