Bears clinch series over Cougars behind complete team performance
After sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Zack Wallace gave up three runs in the bottom of the first, he and three BU relievers combined to throw up eight-straight zeros while the Baylor offense scored 10 runs on 10 hits. All the while, the Bears' defense was spectacular with multiple diving plays on the infield and a trio of double plays turned, moving BU's Big 12-leading total to 25 twin killings on the season.
For the second time in their last four conference series, the Bears (15-11, 4-4 Big 12) have now won each of the first two games of the weekend as redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders led the way at the plate with two hits and three RBIs, including his 100th knock of his career, a two-run homer in the eighth inning.
Wallace collected his third win of the season, while junior infielder Robert De La Garza added two knocks off the bench and redshirt freshman infielder Brytton Clements pitched in a pair of RBIs on the afternoon.
THE RUNDOWN
Houston struck first with a two-run homer and an RBI double in the bottom of the first, all coming with two outs, to take an early 3-0 lead. But, Wallace bounced back with a clean second and the Bears responded in the top of the third, scoring six runs on four hits and two UH errors.
Sophomore infielder Cade Dodson started the inning with a sharp single to right on the first pitch he saw, then scored all the way from first on Sanders' RBI double that was sliced into the right-field corner. A Cougar fielding error allowed Sanders to score, then Clements walked with the bases loaded two batters later to tie the score at 3-3.
With two outs, fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson grounded sharply to the UH first baseman who booted it and allowed all three Bears to score, giving BU a 6-3 lead. Wallace put up four-straight zeros from there and exited after giving up just one hit, one walk and one hit by pitch over his final four frames.
In the top of the sixth, sophomore utility man Pearson Riebock flared a two-out RBI single into left field to add another tally to the Baylor lead at 7-3. And in the seventh, Clements drove in De La Garza, who had tripled, with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-3.
All the while, the Bears flashed the leather across the diamond as Dodson made an outstanding diving play well into foul territory in the fifth, Clements and Sanders teamed up for an impressive 4-6-3 double play in the sixth, and Sanders made a brilliant heads-up diving stop and back-picked a baserunner at second base from deep in the hole at shortstop in the seventh.
That wouldn't be all though, as Sanders put the cherry on top with a two-run blast in the top of the eighth, the 100th hit of this career, to push the advantage to 10-3. Freshman right-hander Luke McLeod came on to work the final two innings of the ballgame and faced the minimum, as BU turned its third double play of the day before one final diving stop from redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong clinched the series for the Bears.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On if this was the team's most complete performance of the year…
"It's obviously up there, for sure. I thought our defense was spot on today. We made four really nice diving plays on the infield, [Cade] Dodson made two of them and Tyce [Armstrong] picked him up on both the throws. Tyce made a couple nice diving plays, Travis Sanders, I guess it was five diving plays. Defense was spot on and it was awesome to watch. I thought the big thing for me was Zack Wallace going out there and going four shutout innings (after the first). We take the lead, and then we don't sit on it, we just kept adding to it. Really great job by our pitching staff throwing up eight-straight zeros after that, but our defense played such a huge role. And then to score 10 and get it done offensively, it was a great day."
Redshirt Junior INF Travis Sanders
On what was most exciting from today's win…
"For me personally, the defense. Everything I ever do defensively, I'd rather make a web gem than hit a home run. I take pride in my defense, that's something I can control. Hitting is not always in my hands. I know if I get hit a ground ball, it's on me, so in-game when it shows up, the work I've put in, it's awesome. I love playing defense. Those plays make me happy."
