Bears win 14-7 behind solid start from Calder and 13-hit output
Behind seven strong innings of work on the mound from senior southpaw Ethan Calder and a 13-hit performance offensively, the Bears (16-11, 5-4 Big 12) fought their way to the first road sweep by any team in Big 12 conference play so far this season.
Calder matched his career high for the third time with seven frames and was dominant outside of a three-run inning, scattering seven hits and allowing four runs with two strikeouts and no walks. He recorded 12 outs on two pitches or less and got ahead with first-pitch strikes to 21 of the 29 batters he faced.
At the plate, all nine batters in the BU lineup hit safely for the first time this year and six different Bears drove in runs. Baylor also stole a season-high eight bases, its most in a single game since 2006, and benefitted from four UH (13-14, 1-8 Big 12) errors on the day.
THE RUNDOWN
Both sides went quietly in the first, but that proved to be a rarity as the Bears and Cougars combined to score runs in seven of the next eight frames. Baylor jumped out to the game's first lead in the top of the second, plating four runs on two hits and a UH error. A three-base throwing error on a sacrifice bunt allowed the first two runs to score, then an RBI groundout from fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson and a wild pitch accounted for the remaining runs.
Calder continued to cruise the first time and a half through the lineup, and after an RBI double from sophomore infielder Cade Dodson in the top of the fourth and an RBI fielder's choice from redshirt freshman infielder Brytton Clements in the fifth, the Bears held a 6-0 lead midway through the ballgame.
In the bottom of the fifth, a two-out, two-run triple got the Coogs on the board and a BU fielding error allowing the batter-runner to score on the play, as the home side cut into the green and gold's lead at 6-3. A solo home run brought the Cougars within two in the bottom of the sixth, but that's as close as they would get as Baylor padded its lead over the final three frames.
Redshirt sophomore designated hitter John Youens doubled in a run in the top of the seventh, then came around to score on a Johnson RBI knock that doubled the lead back up to 8-4. Then in the eighth, the Bears opened it up with a four-spot as Dodson scored on an RBI fielder's choice, redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders scored on a wild pitch, redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong doubled in a run and then scored on Clements' RBI single to make it 12-4.
Houston showed some fight in the bottom of the eighth with a bases-clearing double and forced BU to turn to fifth-year senior closer Caleb Bunch, but he escaped further damage and brought the Bears back up to the dish in the ninth with another opportunity to add on. Freshman outfielder Brady Janusek jumped all over a 2-2 offering for his sixth home run of the year, a two-run blast, to push the Baylor lead to a touchdown at 14-7. Bunch worked around a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the ninth and recorded the final out of the game on a strikeout to seal Baylor's second conference sweep of the Mitch Thompson era.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On a hard-fought win to complete the sweep…
"Sweeps aren't easy man, it's a dogfight. Just proud of the continued effort from the guys, and we had enough to get it done. It's a big road sweep for us, it's awesome. It all starts on the mound. Really proud of Ethan [Calder], I thought he was fantastic. Gave us seven good innings. We got 17-plus innings out of our starting pitching, only had to come up with 10 out of the bullpen. That's going to make us better. They showed up this weekend. Winning a sweep on the road is a big deal."
Junior C JJ Kennett
On adding on with runs late in the ballgame…
"Thompy said it on Friday and we've kept on preaching it, it's never enough. We knew that UH was going to give us everything they had. So much fight. They came back from a 7-0 deficit against Texas on Tuesday. It's never enough, especially in a ballpark like this. So just sticking to our approach and doing what we do best, hammering the heater, staying on the barrel, it was the best thing we could've done and it was awesome. We're a competitive group, we're an athletic group and that's what we really showed this weekend is that we can do it at a super high level, we've just got to keep our nose to the grindstone and keep doing it every day. Every play matters, every pitch matters, our preparation matters, everything is game speed. Just keeping that competitiveness and toughness is what we need to pride ourselves on."
Senior LHP Ethan Calder
On his performance today and the pitching staff's entire weekend…
"Anytime you have a chance to sweep, you want to go out there and give your team everything. Offense put up a bunch of runs early and so my goal was just to go as deep as possible. Just tried to give as little innings as possible for the bullpen so we can rest up and get a win on Tuesday. I think all three of us have a fight within us. If we give up a couple runs, we're going to bounce back and try to give our offense any opportunity to win. Our offense was rolling this weekend, so I was just pitching behind them today."
WHAT'S NEXT
