Lady Bears split final day with win over Kent State, loss to No. 8 Florida State
THE RUNDOWN
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – No. 19 Baylor split its action on Saturday afternoon at Bogle Park. After dropping a hard-fought contest to No. 8 Florida State, the Lady Bears battled in a 5-2 come-from-behind victory over Kent State to close out the Wooo Pig Classic.
Kyla Walker and Maddison Kettler, who hit in the first and second spots in the lineup for BU, finished the day with five hits each.
GAME 1: FLORIDA STATE 5, BAYLOR 3
Baylor got off to a hot start in the rematch vs. the Seminoles. Walker led things off with a single through the left side and scored soon after off a home run by Aliyah Pritchett, the freshman's fourth of her career.
After Pritchett's homer, Lou Gilbert singled through the left side and Emily Hott reached base off an FSU error, which forced the Seminoles to make a pitching change in the opening inning.
The BU defense retired the first six Florida State batters in order with five of those outs coming via the Gia Rodoni strikeout.
FSU took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning before it added two more in the sixth.
Baylor fought back in the bottom of the seventh as Taylor Ellis led things off with a single up the middle. Back-to-back groundouts advanced Ellis to third. A single by Kettler scored Ellis to cut Florida State's lead to two.
Rodoni went the distance in the circle for BU and finished with nine strikeouts.
GAME 2: BAYLOR 5, KENT STATE 2
The Lady Bears finished out their time in Arkansas with a win as they came from behind with two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth.
Kent State jumped out to a 2-0 lead as the Golden Flashes recorded four hits in the frame. However, Kent State stranded three baserunners as Pritchett got a pair of strikeouts and Goose McGlaun made a play at first to end the inning. That was all the damage Kent State was able to do on the board as it totaled three baserunners over the next five frames.
Meanwhile, the Baylor offense threatened with at least one hit in every inning. In the fifth, BU got a run across the plate, thanks in part to aggressive base running by Walker. The senior outfielder hit her third single of the game and advanced to third off a single up the middle by Kettler. She came home when Gilbert grounded out to shortstop. Baylor tied the game off an RBI single to center field by Pritchett.
The Lady Bears continued to ride that momentum in the bottom of the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles by McGlaun and Hannah Thompson put two runners on with one out for Taylor Ellis who decided to lay down a bunt when she saw the defense playing back. Ellis was safe at first after an errant throw pulled the Kent State first baseman off the bag.
Two batters later, a big swing by Kettler gave the Lady Bears the lead for good as her double cleared the bases.
Kent State wasn't going down without a fight, though. The Golden Flashes had runners on the corners with one out when Rodoni came on to pitch for Pritchett. After a strikeout, Kent State loaded the bases with a walk, but another strikeout ended the game.
Pritchett picked up the win as she gave up two runs off eight hits with six strikeouts to move to 7-0 on the season. Rodoni earned her second save of the season.
HIGHLIGHTS
8 – Baylor's three-run win over Kent State broke a streak of eight-straight BU victories by one run.
TOP QUOTES
Glenn Moore on the tournament…
"This was another good weekend. As I told the team, this tournament field was as strong as any regional I've been a part of. To come away with three wins, with two over ranked teams, gives me confidence we can compete with anyone."
