COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 12 Missouri (26-5, 5-2) scored all of its runs via home runs, defeating No. 17 Baylor (22-10, 1-4) 6-1 at University Field on Friday night. The Lady Bears collected six hits on the night to the Tigers seven.
"I thought we came ready to play," head coach Glenn Moore. "The long ball was the difference tonight and they were on the right side of it."
Kelsi Kettler had two of the team's six hits and scored the lone BU run.
Courtney Repka (10-5) went 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, six runs and four walks. Liz Paul came on for 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and walking one.
Baylor looked to score first, as Kettler singled back up the middle and was pinch ran for by Kaitlyn Thumann, who stole second with one out. Sydney Wilson was hit by a pitch to put a pair of runners on with just one out, but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat.
Missouri got on the board in the second with a first pitch home run to right center for the 1-0 lead.
The lead doubled with another solo homer in the bottom of the third, this time from Corrin Genovese, that just tucked inside the left field foul pole, making it 2-0.
Baylor threatened in the fifth, as Clare Hosack led off the inning with a rope off the diving glove of the third baseman. With two outs, Kathy Shelton drew a walk, but a Megan Turk strikeout ended the threat, stranding two.
The Tigers busted the game open in the bottom of the fifth, as Lindsey Muller hit a grand slam to left field, just out of the reach of Sydney Wilson's outstretched glove for the 6-0 lead. Genovese led off the inning with a walk and got to second on a single from Jenna Marston, and the bases became loaded with a single from Kelsea Roth.
The Lady Bears scratched across a run in the sixth with Kettler and Holly Holl leading off with back-to-back singles. With one out, Missouri catcher Marston tried to pick Holl off at first and threw the ball into the right field corner, allowing Kettler to score from second.
Game two of the series is set for 3:30 pm on Saturday and will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Net.
