Senior Jordan Daniels collected four hits and five RBI to lead the Lady Bears to a split of their opening games in day one of the Getterman Classic, Friday. No. 7 Baylor (1-1) blanked Syracuse (0-2), 8-0, in six innings in the opener before falling in the nightcap to Purdue (4-2), 6-5 in eight innings.
In the opener, Baylor got on the board in the second as Maritza Martinez singled to score Daniels, who reached with a single of her own.
The Lady Bears busted it open in the third with four runs on five hits. After a Kirsten Shortridge single, the Keller, Texas, native stole second and third before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. Baylor manufactured its second run using the speed of Tiffany Wesley, who, after reaching on a single, scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Morgan Craig, who pinch-ran for Jordan Vannatta, scored on a Daniels single and was brought in on a single by Alex Colyer.
Baylor made it 5-0 in the fifth after another Daniels single scored KJ Freeland, who pinch-ran for Courtney Oberg after her walk. The Lady Bears ended the game in the sixth as Nicole Wesley and Shortridge began the inning with a pair of singles, and were brought around to score after T. Wesley reached on an error.
Jenny Isham kept the Syracuse bats at bay, as the junior held the Orange hitless through 4.1 innings. She ended the game giving up just one hit and striking out two in five innings of work. Brittany Turner came in to finish off the win, throwing an inning of hitless ball and adding a strikeout.
Baylor didn't get off to the same start in game two, as Purdue, who was the home team, scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Shortridge limited the damage, striking out back-to-back batters to end the inning.
The Boilermakers added a run in the third to make it 4-0, but the Lady Bears' bats came alive in the fourth.
T. Wesley singled to start the inning and moved over to second after a Brette Reagan walk. An Oberg walk loaded the bases and a Vannatta sacrifice fly to left scored T. Wesley from third. With runners at first and second, Daniels laced a shot to right center for her first career home run to tie the game at four.
Purdue answered in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double to take a 5-4 lead.
With one out, Shortridge reached on an error by the first basemen and stole second to get into scoring position. With two outs and two strikes, Reagan hit a triple through the left side to score Shortridge and tie the game.
Turner, who relieved Shortridge in the sixth, made it through the seventh after a great diving play by Colyer at second got the third out.
In the eighth, Oberg was placed on second per international tiebreak rules, and took third on a wild pitch. With no outs, and runners on the corners, Daniels hit the ball to the right side, but Oberg was picked off third for the first out, and the Lady Bears were not able to plate another run.
In Purdue's half of the eighth, Candace Curtis was placed at second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Tara Palmer stepped in and hit a single into right field to score Curtis and win the game for the Boilermakers, 6-5.
Turner picked up the loss despite giving up just one earned run in two innings of work. Shortridge pitched 5.1 innings, giving up six hits, three earned runs and striking out four.
