DENTON, Texas --- Despite allowing seven unearned runs, the No. 8 Baylor softball team pulled out a 9-7 win over North Texas, the Lady Bears fifth consecutive victory, in action at Denia Field. With the win, Baylor improved to 44-8 on the season as the Mean Green fell to 10-30 on the season.
After a scoreless first inning, the Baylor offenses scored three runs, all with two outs, to grab the early 3-0 lead. With Kim Wilmoth on second, April Luce smashed a triple to right-center field, scoring Wilmoth from second as Baylor went up on North Texas 1-0. Baylor added three more runs in the third to extend the Lady Bears lead to six. With two outs, Chelsi Lake singled and scored when Stephanie Pomes followed with a double to right-center. Tessa Lynam then smashed a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Lady Bears a 6-0 advantage.
Despite trailing by six, North Texas answered the deficit by scoring five unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. Following an RBI single by Stephanie Cranmer to make the score 6-2, Susan Waters cut the lead to one when she lifted a three-run home run over the left-center field wall to score Cranmer and Katya Muller.
The Lady Bears responded to the North Texas rally, however, by scoring two runs in the fourth. Harmony Schwethelm tripled to right-center field, scoring Jordan Daniels from second, and then came around to score when the throw to third skipped to the fence behind the base as Baylor grabbed a 8-5 lead.
Although North Texas scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead back to one, the Mean Green were unable to tie the Lady Bears as Baylor went on to defeat UNT for the seventh consecutive time.
Lynam put the finishing touches on the win with her second home run of the game and her tenth of the season as Baylor claimed a 9-7 victory.
Lisa Ferguson picked up the win for the Lady Bears and improved to 16-2 on the season after allowing only one hit and one unearned run in 3.2 innings of relief work.
Cristin Vitek also pitched well for the Lady Bears in the win as the senior started the game and retired all six batters she faced in two innings of work before she was relieved by Sarah Hausner.
Kristina Fowler took the loss for North Texas and fell to 7-17 on the season after allowing nine runs on eight hits in the complete game loss.
