The Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year comes to Waco after a career year
WACO — Baylor softball picked up a big portal piece with the signing of Northwestern State's Mattison Buster on Tuesday.
The Sulphur Springs, Texas, native returns to the Lone Star State on the heels of an impressive season under the guidance of new Baylor assistant coach Jenny Fuller at Northwestern State. The Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year tied a program record with 21 wins.
On the heels of Baylor's 17th NCAA Tournament appearance, head coach Glenn Moore is thrilled to bring Buster back to Texas.
"Pitching is the name of the game in our sport, so we are beyond excited to add someone of Mattison's caliber to our rotation," Moore said. "Her resume with Jenny and Brad at Northwestern State speaks for itself, and she is a great fit for our program. We can't wait to see her in the circle at Getterman Stadium next spring."
A three-time SLC Pitcher of the week, Buster led the conference in complete games (22), games started (34), innings pitched (210.0), appearances (39), shutouts (6), strikeouts (116) and wins (21). She finished the regular season as one of 12 pitchers in the country with 20 or more wins, just the fifth Southland pitcher in the past five years to record 20 wins in a season.
Prior to her time in Natchitoches, Buster spent two seasons at Louisiana Tech, appearing in 40 games with 10 starts in the circle and compiling a 4-7 record and a 3.28 ERA over 83.1 innings.
As a freshman in 2024, she earned Conference USA All-Freshman Team honors and was named CUSA Freshman of the Week after posting a conference-leading 1.57 ERA against league opponents.
