Baylor hoping to build on third-place finish at Maridoe
BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – After beating a pair of top-20 teams in a third-place finish at the Maridoe Collegiate, the Baylor men's golf team will play in the Mountaineer Invitational that begins Monday at Pete Dye Golf Club.
Serving as the final tuneup for the Big 12 Championships, the 19-team tournament includes a trio of top-10 teams in fifth-ranked Arkansas, No. 6 Oklahoma State and No. 8 Texas Tech, as well as conference foes TCU and the host West Virginia team.
Rounding out the field are Clemson, Xavier, VCU, UNCG, William & Mary, James Madison, George Mason, Western Kentucky, Villanova, Ball State, Navy, Appalachian State and Sant Francis.
Coming off his second top-10 finish out of four spring tournaments, UConn transfer Alex Heard heads this week's lineup at the No. 1 spot, followed by senior Jonas Appel, Auburn transfer Evan Vo, senior Sam Dossey and junior Davis Ovard.
Led by Heard and Appel, who were sixth and eighth, respectively, Baylor had its second-highest finish of the season with the third-place finish at the Maridoe. The Bears finished behind only Oklahoma State and Arizona State while beating 16th-ranked Oklahoma and No. 16 Alabama.
Through the first nine tournaments, Appel has the best scoring average in the lineup at 72.59, followed by Heard at 73.52 and Vo at 74.22.
The Bears are paired with UNCG for Monday's 7:30 a.m. shotgun start, with live scoring available at Mountaineer Invitational. After a pair of rounds on Monday, the 54-hole tournament wraps up with the final round on Tuesday morning.
