Bears Close Out Fall Slate with 5-0 Sweep of Cincinnati
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Baylor men's golf wrapped up its fall season Wednesday at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament. The three-day event was disrupted by inclement weather and darkness delays, resulting in the fourth round of matches being restarted and the final round being canceled resulting in co champions being crowned.
The tournament marked the conclusion of Baylor's four-event fall schedule and the Bears' first match play competition of the season. The event began with pool play, with the 16-team field divided into four pools of four teams, each competing in three head-to-head matches. Baylor entered the tournament as the No. 13 seed, placing the Bears in Pool D alongside No. 4 Kansas, No. 5 TCU and No. 12 West Virginia.
Pool play was plagued by delays, with the second round of matches suspended due to darkness. Earlier in the opening day, the Bears fell 3-2 to Kansas in their first match of the tournament.
Senior Alex Heard led the way for Baylor, closing out his match with a commanding 5&4 victory. Jonas Appel and Davis Ovard each battled through 18 holes but were unable to secure outright victories, finishing their respective matches tied. Freshman Chase Yenser entered the 18th hole one down but dropped the final hole after Kansas' Vidal Reig made birdie, resulting in a 2-down defeat. Tyler Sanford also came up short, falling 3&2.
In the second match of pool play, Baylor made a lineup adjustment, substituting junior transfer Jack Murphy for Yenser as the Bears faced rival TCU.
The tightly contested match saw neither team establish a commanding advantage. Heard, Murphy and Sanford each finished their matches tied, while Ovard secured Baylor's lone outright victory with a 1-up win. Appel fell short against TCU's Charlie Wylie, resulting in a 2.5-2.5 tie between the Bears and Horned Frogs.
Baylor made another lineup adjustment for its final match of pool play, bringing Yenser back into the lineup in place of Sanford as the Bears faced West Virginia.
The Bears got off to a strong start against West Virginia, with Heard and Ovard securing Baylor's first two points. Heard earned a 3&1 victory, while Ovard delivered a dominant 5&4 win. Appel battled through the 18th hole but ultimately fell short, while Yenser and Murphy each saw their matches conclude on the 16th hole. West Virginia claimed the match by a 3-2 margin.
With the final round of pool play concluding late, the first round of placement matches began before being postponed to Wednesday due to ongoing delays. Baylor was matched against Cincinnati, with Heard, Appel, Ovard, Murphy and Sanford representing the Bears in their final matchup of the fall season.
Baylor closed out the tournament in dominant fashion, sweeping Cincinnati 5-0 in its final match. Jack Murphy led the way for the Bears with a commanding 7&6 victory, while Jonas Appel followed with a 5&4 win. Davis Ovard secured a 4&2 victory, and Alex Heard added a 2&1 win of his own. Tyler Sanford completed the sweep with a tightly contested 1-up victory, giving Baylor a strong finish to its four-event fall schedule.
Baylor finished the tournament with a 1-2-1 record, highlighted by strong individual performances from Alex Heard and Davis Ovard, who each went unbeaten across all four matches with identical 3-0-1 records. The Bears now turn their attention to the spring portion of the 2026-27 season, looking to build on the momentum of their final match of the fall.
