Bearcats pull away from early pitchers’ duel to take 11-1 victory
CINCINNATI – Baylor baseball dropped its series opener at Cincinnati, 11-1, in eight innings on Friday night at the UC Baseball Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Bears (19-14, 7-6 Big 12) took an early lead and battled through what appeared to be a pitcher's duel for the first four and a half innings, but the Bearcats (23-13, 5-8 Big 12) pulled away with multiple runs in each of the final four frames.
Despite BU tagging him for five hits over the first three innings, UC's starting pitcher junior right-hander Nathan Taylor settled in nicely and struck out 11 Bears over seven innings and allowed just one run on seven hits and two walks.
Redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong did the damage for BU at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Freshmen outfielders Brady Janusek and Dylan Perez each added a pair of hits for Baylor on the night as well.
THE RUNDOWN
Staring down what could have been a quick top of the first inning, Janusek turned around a Taylor fastball with two strikes to spark a two-out rally for the Bears in the opening frame. After Janusek stole second base, Armstrong doubled him in to give BU an early 1-0 advantage.
In the home half, Baylor's starter redshirt junior right-hander Lucas Davenport notched his first two strikeouts of the night on his way to cruising through the UC order the first time through.
Perez notched his first-career hit, a double, with two outs in the second but the Bears left him aboard, one of five stranded runners in the first three frames that BU couldn't cash in on. Armstrong doubled for the second time in the top of the third and redshirt freshman designated hitter Hunter Snow beat out an infield single, but again both Bears remained stranded.
In the bottom of the third, Cincinnati made use of two hits and two Baylor errors to take a 2-1 lead. A one-out throwing error preceded a double and a subsequent two-run single gave the Bearcats their first lead of the game. With the lead, Taylor began to settle in and fanned five of the next seven BU batters he faced in the fourth and fifth innings, with his only blemish coming via a Janusek two-out double.
UC added on in the fifth with a three spot on the heels of four hits and a walk in the inning. After Davenport exited in the sixth, a two-run double for Cincinnati swelled the lead to 7-1 and a two-run single in the seventh made it 9-1 in favor of the home team.
The Bearcats delivered the final blow, a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, to enforce the mercy rule and put a stamp on the series opener.

On it feeling like two different ballgames…
"They put some runs on us and we decided to go a different route in the bullpen, then they kept tacking on. It's not our night. We didn't pitch well enough. We gave up too many free bases, made a couple errors defensively. If you're going to win in this league, you've got to play well. We're facing a real guy on their end, they were facing our real guy. [Lucas] Davenport was throwing the ball really well, but they punched a couple across. We had some really good, competitive at-bats against [Nathan Taylor] early, we just couldn't get enough across early to give us some room to breathe."
