BU’s No. 14 Badenhorst earns ranked win over No. 3 Friend
TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 8 Baylor men's tennis couldn't find momentum in the desert, falling to No. 15 Arizona on Friday afternoon in Tucson in its conference opener, 4-1.
The Bears (12-7) dropped the doubles point and were unable to recover despite a dominant ranked singles win from Devin Badenhorst, who took down the No. 3 player in the nation Jay Friend, 6-3, 6-0, earning his second top-10 singles win of the dual season.
THE RUNDOWN
Starting in doubles, Arizona (15-3) took control early with wins on Courts One and Two. Jay Friend and Alexander Rozin defeated Luc Koenig and Connor Van Schalkwyk, 6-3, on Court Two before No. 16 duo of Filip Gustafsson and Glib Sekachov topped No. 69 Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz, 6-3, on Court One to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
In singles, No. 14 Badenhorst got Baylor on the board with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 upset over No. 3 Friend on Court One to even the match at 1-1. Arizona responded with victories on Courts Five, Four and Six, as Glib Sekachov defeated Koenig, 6-3, 6-1, No. 122 Zoran Ludoski topped No. 104 Chirita, 6-4, 6-1, and Alejandro Arcila secured the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Louis Bowden. Velcz and Van Schalkwyk both had matches in progress when the dual was decided.
