Bears dominate No. 25 Arizona State in Tempe
TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 8 Baylor men's tennis finished out its trip out west with a dominant 4-0 sweep over No. 25 Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Baylor (13-7) secured the doubles point and collected straight-set singles wins from Devin Badenhorst, Connor Van Schalkwyk and Louis Bowden to clinch the victory over the Arizona State (13-7). The Bears controlled the match throughout and picked up their first conference win of the season.
THE RUNDOWN
Starting in doubles, Baylor struck first on Court Two as Connor Van Schalkwyk and Luc Koenig defeated Ofek Shimanov and Bor Artnak, 6-3. The doubles point was secured on Court One where No. 69 Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz battled to a gritty 7-6(8) win over Jelani Sarr and Roi Ginat. The match on Court Three was in a tight tiebreaker before going unfinished with BU leading 1-0.
In singles, No. 14 Badenhorst continued to find success out in the desert and extended Baylor's advantage with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 100 Bor Artnak on Court One to make it 2-0.
No. 26 Connor Van Schalkwyk followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Shu Matsuoka on Court Three to push the Bears ahead. Louis Bowden then sealed the match for Baylor with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kristof Minarik on Court Six, securing the 4-0 sweep. Zsombor Velcz, Alexandru Chirita and Luc Koenig all had matches in progress when the dual was decided.
