Senior wins five straight in consolation bracket to punch NCAA ticket
TULSA, Okla. – Connor Van Schalkwyk punched his ticket to the NCAA Singles Championship this fall in Athens after a run through the consolation bracket at the ITA All-American Championships, highlighting a busy week for Baylor men's tennis. The Bears went a combined 17-11 in singles and doubles play in Tulsa this week.
The senior from Windhoek, Namibia, dropped a three-set decision in the round of 32 of the main draw Thursday, falling to No. 15 Amirkhamza Nasridinov of Texas A&M 7-5, 7-6(6). He responded by winning five straight matches in the consolation bracket, closing with a 6-3, 6(3)-7, 6-3 win over No. 78 Luca Preda of Virginia in Sunday's semifinal to secure the NCAA Singles Championship berth.
The 2026 ITA Men's All-American Championships featured a singles draw of 160 in pre-qualifying, 64 in qualifying and 64 in the main draw, along with a doubles draw of 32 in each of the three brackets. Ten singles players qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship, made up of the eight main draw quarterfinalists and two feed-in consolation finalists. Five doubles teams advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championship, comprising the four main draw semifinalists and the consolation champion.
Van Schalkwyk opened the week by beating No. 48 Pablo Martinez Gomez of Vanderbilt 6-2, 6-3 in the main draw. In the consolation bracket, he defeated No. 43 Oliver Ojakaar of Texas by walkover, No. 10 Matthew Forbes of Ohio State 6-2, 6-4, No. 88 Tomasz Berkieta of Texas 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) and No. 34 Paul Barbier Gazeu of South Carolina 6-4, 7-6 (4) before topping Preda in the semifinal. He finished the week 7-2 in singles.
Van Schalkwyk also teamed with Erik Schiessl in doubles. The pair, ranked at No. 14, beat No. 30 Roh and Martinez Gomez of Vanderbilt 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 before falling to South Carolina's Robertson and Barbier Gazeu 6-3, 7-5, finishing 1-1.
Schiessl had a strong week in his own right, going 3-2 in singles. He won three straight matches to open the tournament in the qualifying draw, beating Danial Rakhmatullayev of Michigan State 6-4, 6-3, No. 75 Azariah Rusher of Florida State 6-2, 6-0 and No. 33 Jangjun Kim of Virginia 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the main draw's round of 32, where he lost to No. 3 seed Aidan Kim of Ohio State 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5). He fell in the consolation bracket to No. 56 Hudson Rivera of Stanford 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (5).
No. 5 Devin Badenhorst went 0-2 in singles, falling in the main draw's round of 64 to No. 85 Toby Kodat of NC State 6-3, 6-1, then losing in the consolation round to Paul Gazeu Barbier of South Carolina 6-4, 6-4. Badenhorst paired with Calvin Baierl in doubles, and the sixth-seeded duo went 3-1, beating Fairfield's Alcala and Krolikowski 6-0, 7-5 and Georgia's Alonso and Dubouch 6-4, 6-2, with a walkover win over Cal's Pouatcha and Luemkemann sandwiched between a loss to Ohio State's Okonkow and Forbes.
Baierl went 2-1 in singles, reaching the round of 40 in pre-qualifying by beating No. 21 Tiago Pires of Clemson 6-1, 7-5 and Callum Markowitz of Pennsylvania 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 before a walkover loss to UCLA's Andy Nguyen. Radek Chodora went 1-1, beating Luis Llorens Saracho of Notre Dame 6-4, 6-2 before falling to No. 21 Kevin Edengren of Florida 6-3, 7-6 (4). Louis Bowden went 1-2, advancing by walkover over Kentucky's Jack Loutit before falling to Texas' Gabriel Debru, the No. 5 seed, by walkover in the consolation round; in the main draw he lost to No. 12 Preston Stearns of Ohio State 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.
Van Schalkwyk will next compete at the NCAA Singles Championship later this fall in Athens.
