STORYLINES
LEADING OFF
• Baylor Baseball wraps up its season-opening four-game homestand by playing host to in-state foe Texas State on Tuesday night at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark.
• BU will next travel to Round Rock for the Round Rock Classic at Dell Diamond, where the Bears will face a pair of top-25 opponents in No. 7 Oregon State and No. 18 Southern Miss, as well as Purdue.
• The Bears are coming off an Opening Weekend sweep over New Mexico State, in which BU outscored the Aggies 27-7 over the three-game series.
• The sweep marked the second-straight season that Baylor has opened the year with an Opening Weekend sweep.
• In Friday's Opening Day contest, redshirt senior 1B Tyce Armstrong became the second player in NCAA history to hit three grand slams in the same game, joining Louisville's Jim LaFountain who did so on March 24, 1976.
• BU returns 20 players from its 2025 roster, including three position player starters (Johnson, Sanders, Riebock), and welcomes 17 newcomers.
• Baylor has 19 underclassmen (Fr., R-Fr., So., R-So.) on its 2026 squad.
• 30 players on the 37-man roster are in their first or second years with the program.
THE TYCE IS RIGHT
• Redshirt senior 1B Tyce Armstrong became just the second player in NCAA history to hit three grand slams in the same game when he did so in Friday's season opener against New Mexico State.
• Armstrong tied the BU single-game program record with three home runs and his 12 RBIs topped Shea Langeliers' previous record of 11 (set on June 1, 2019, vs. Omaha).
• Armstrong and Louisville's Jim LaFountain are the only players in college baseball history to hit three grand slams in a single game. LaFountain did so on March 24, 1976, as part of a four-home run game that included two grand slams in the same inning.
• No player in Major League Baseball history has ever hit three grand slams in one game; in fact, only once has it ever happened where a team has hit three grand slams in one game -- the 2011 New York Yankees on August 25 against the Oakland Athletics.
• Armstrong's feat went viral on social media Friday night and he made an appearance on MLB Network's "Hot Stove" with Robert Flores and Harold Reynolds on Monday morning.
• Armstrong is the nation's leader in RBIs with 14 after the Opening Weekend.
• Armstrong came to the plate with the bases loaded two more times against NMSU, delivering a sacrifice fly on Saturday and getting hit by a pitch on Sunday to add to his RBI total.
TEXAS STATE ON A TUESDAY
• Baylor is 55-28 all-time against Texas State, including 1-1 against the Bobcats under Thompson.
• Last season, BU went 11-1 in midweek games; the Bears only loss was to Texas State (6-2 on April 8 in Waco).
• The Bears are 27-11 in midweek games during the Thompson Era.
PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS
• Tues. Feb. 17 • 6:30 p.m. CT • RHP Zack Wallace (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. RHP Sam Hall (0-1, 5.40 ERA)*
*stats from 2025 season
OPENING WEEKEND IN REVIEW
• Baylor improved to 7-5 on Opening Weekend under fourth-year head coach Mitch Thompson by collecting its second-consecutive season-opening sweep.
• BU improved to 67-37 all-time on Opening Day, with wins in seven of its last 11 season openers.
• Since 2016, the Bears have now won six of their last 11 Opening Weekend series.
• Baylor dominated New Mexico State, outscoring the Aggies 27-7 over the three-game series.
• On Friday, the Bears scored 15 runs and won in run-rule fashion as Armstrong's three grand slams led the way for the green and gold offensively. Lucas Davenport (4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 SO) turned in a solid outing in his first-career start.
• In Saturday's 5-2 victory, BU put up five runs in the first inning thanks in part to back-to-back blasts by John Youens and Brady Janusek, each of their first-career home runs.
• In Sunday's series finale, the Baylor bullpen was excellent, combining for five scoreless frames, including 2.2 perfect innings from Cayden Baker, RJ Ruais and Luke DeVasher, as the Bears pulled away late for a 7-3 win.
BIG INNINGS IN THE BEGINNING
• Baylor has scored runs in just seven innings this season, but has put up at least three runs in six of those frames.
• The Bears have come out hot offensively with a five-spot in the first inning Saturday night against NMSU and followed that with a three-spot in the opening frame on Sunday against the Aggies.
• BU has one inning with four runs, two innings with five runs, and one inning with six runs already this season.
BROADCAST INFO
• Tuesday's game will be televised on ESPN+
• Fans can also tune in to Kicker Country 99.3 FM/1590 AM to hear the Baylor radio broadcast, featuring Tom Barfield and former Bear Richard Cunningham on the call.
• The television feed will pull the radio broadcast for simulcasting on Tuesday night.
