Bears qualify to NCAA Championships with a win over Horned Frogs at TCU in final
FORT WORTH, Texas – Baylor women's tennis capped an impressive showing at the ITA Texas Regional Championships with a doubles title from Na Dong and Zuzanna Kubacha, marking the program's 12th ITA Regional championship overall and the 11th under head coach Joey Scrivano.
Dong and Kubacha claimed five straight victories to capture the regional crown and secure an automatic berth to the 2025 NCAA Doubles Championships in Orlando, Fla. The duo opened with an 8-4 win over Texas State's Tadiwanashe Mauchi and Charolette Roesch before cruising past SMU's Natalie Stasny and Allie Bittner, 8-0, in the Round of 16. They followed with an 8-4 win over Houston's Chems Doha Zeghlouli and Sophie Schouten in the quarterfinals, then topped Texas A&M's Mia Kupres and Daria Smetannikov, 7-5, 6-1, in the semifinals.
In Tuesday's final, the Baylor tandem defeated TCU's Yu-Chin Tsai and Victoria Gomez O'hayon, 6-3, 6-3, to clinch the doubles championship.
Elsewhere in doubles play, Alian Zack and Kennedy Gibbs advanced to the Round of 16 with wins over Tarleton State's Aya Ishii and Maria Castano (8-2) and Houston's Valeriia Krokhotina (8-6).
In singles action, Kubacha led the way with three wins, including victories over Texas State's Ireland Simme (6-2, 6-3) and Texas' Mathilde Ngijol (7-6(1), 6-0), before falling in the Round of 16 to TCU's Raquel Caballero Chica.
Dong reached the Round of 32 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over TAMU-CC's Yana Mykytyn, while Wenfei Yu and Gibbs also recorded straight-set victories in their opening rounds.
In consolation play, Zack posted back-to-back wins over SFA's Felicia Back (6-0, 7-6(3)) and TCU's Letizia Corsini (6-2, 6-4).
