Kubacha upsets No. 3 seed as Bears go 6-5 in Cary
CARY, N.C. – Baylor women's tennis wrapped up play at the ITA All-American Championships, with Zuzanna Kubacha and Kenna Erickson advancing to the doubles quarterfinals. The Bears went a combined 6-5 on the week.
Kubacha led the way in singles, opening the main draw with a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 3 seed Piper Charney of Michigan. She followed with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Mao Mushika of Cal in the round of 32 before falling to No. 16 seed Rose Marie Nijkamp of Texas 7-5, 6-2 in the round of 16. Kubacha bounced back in the consolation bracket, beating Margot Phanthala of Columbia 7-6 (2), 6-2 to finish 3-1 in singles.
Kubacha and Erickson teamed up in doubles and won their first two matches. They beat Naomi Xu and Mao Mushika of Cal 7-5, 7-5 in the round of 32, then topped Gloriana Nahum and Sara Shumate of Oklahoma 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 16. The duo fell to No. 6 seed Maddy Zampardo and Susanna Maltby of North Carolina 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals to finish 2-1.
Erickson went 1-1 in singles. She lost in the pre-qualifying round of 256 to No. 21 seed Kenzie Nguyen of Columbia 6-2, 6-3, then won in the consolation bracket over Mia Soso of Iowa 6-3, 6-4.
Alian Zack, the No. 17 seed, went 0-2 in singles. She fell in the qualifying round of 64 to Bella Payne of Georgia 7-6 (0), 6-2, then lost in the consolation round of 32 to Laura Brunkel of Oklahoma 6-3, 6-4.
