BU returns to Kierland Golf Club for a second-straight season
PHOENIX, Ariz. – No. 12 Baylor women's golf returns to the Phoenix area for the second time in 10 days for the inaugural Big 12 Match Play Championship on Friday.
Rosie Belsham, Britta Snyder and BaiMai Seema are making the trip this week after competing at Kierland Golf Club in a modified match-play event in January 2022. They also participated in a true match-play match against Virginia as a part of the Stephens Cup in October of 2021.
Outside of those events, Baylor hasn't competed in many regular-season match-play competitions since head coach Jay Goble arrived in Waco. Still, he is excited about the change in format.
"I think match play is exciting," he said. "It's very different from stroke play. I'm really looking forward to this, as is our team. They all play a lot of match play in their respective countries, and while they don't get much of that experience over here, they like it. We're happy to be here and play in this tournament. That little format change is going to be fun.
Sera Hasegawa will make the trip fresh off her career-first win at Papago Golf Club in Tempe. The Gifu, Japan, native has been a dependable piece of the lineup, shooting par or better in 67% of her rounds this season.
Belsham is 2-1 in her career in true match-play settings and went a perfect 6-0 in last year's modified match-play event at Kierland. Belsham leads the team in par-or-better percentage, making at least a par on 83.3% of holes this season.
Snyder is 2-1 in true match play while going 3-3 at the Desert Match Play last spring. Snyder shot her best round of the season in the desert earlier this spring, a 5-under 67 at Superstition Mountain Golf Club.
Hannah Karg is 1-1 all-time in her match-play career. Karg has recorded rounds of par or better in four of her last six rounds.
Silje Ohma will make her Baylor match-play debut. The freshman has shot six rounds in the 60s this season, including a 5-under 67 at Superstition Mountain Golf Club at the Match in the Desert in January.
Seema will also make the trip, carrying an 0-1 record in true match-play, but went 3-3 at the Desert Match Play last year. Seema also shot an even-par 72 at the Match in the Desert earlier this season.
The second-seeded Bears will open with pool play on Friday morning against No. 5 Texas Tech and No. 8 Oklahoma and face No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 9 Kansas State on Friday Afternoon. Pool play will wrap up for BU on Saturday morning when they face No. 1 Texas and No. 3 Iowa State. Once those matches are concluded, teams will be seeded 1-8 with the top four teams meeting in a pair of semifinals on Saturday afternoon. The winner of the two semifinal matches will meet in the championship match on Sunday morning, while the remaining teams will play in a consolation bracket. Live stats and scoring will be available throughout the event at GolfStat.com.
