Putting runners on base in all but one inning, Baylor softball had plenty of chances to get on the board in Friday's series opener at Getterman Stadium.
But, after coming up empty in the first five frames, the Bears (27-19, 5-8) strung together back-to-back hits in the sixth and finally broke through with Sydney Collazos' RBI single to pull out a 1-0 win over the visiting Iowa State Cyclones.
"We've got a lot of people on this roster hitting the ball hard," Collazos said, "just not clicking with back-to-back. So, that was huge. it felt good for me to be productive for my team."
Locked in a pitcher's duel with Iowa State's Saya Swain and Ellie Spelhaugh, Baylor sophomore Dariana Orme (12-11) tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout and lowered her ERA to 2.73. She struck out three and walked two, throwing 87 pitches in seven innings.
"When you're striking out eight or 10, you're going to throw more pitches. That's a sign of her letting the defense work, and they made some good plays," Baylor coach Glenn Moore said. "She didn't have nearly as many three-ball counts as she typically does. We're challenging her to not go as deep in the county and not have those five, six seven-pitch at-bats."
Asked what specifically was working for her, Orme quickly blurted out, "My defense."
"I know I didn't have all my best stuff today," she said, "but I was able to trust that I can get somebody to pop up and my defense is going to catch it. So, that's what was working for me today, trust in my team."
Baylor's frustration started in the first inning, when the first three batters reached base but didn't score. McKenzie Wilson and Aliyah Binford singled around a walk by Emily Hott, but Wilson was thrown out trying to steal and Hott was left stranded at third when Ana Watson flied out to center.
In the third inning, Wilson hit a double off the wall in right, but Swain wiggled out of trouble again when Hott flied out to left and Binford struck out swinging.
"We had some good at-bats, just couldn't get them to fall," Moore said. "We just can't seem to push them across, but we got enough. All we needed was one because of our defense and because of Dari. And we got that right in the nick of time."
After Orme got out of trouble in the top of the sixth, when she gave up two hits, the Bears got it going in the bottom half of the inning with a one-out walk by Watson. After Kaci West singled, Collazos drove in Watson with a single to left-center field.
Given a lead, Orme didn't mess around in the seventh, retiring the side in order with three-straight flyouts.
"She continues to amaze me, I'm not even kidding," Collazos said. "She's so dominant in the circle. She has a presence and an authority, and she is one of the best teammates. She's not full of herself. She's so humble, and she's got all of our backs before her own."
Baylor goes for the series win with Saturday's 2 p.m. game and wraps it up with a series finale at noon Sunday.
"They're a good team, regardless of what their record is in the Big 12," Moore said the Cyclones, who fell to 22-25 overall and 2-11 in the league. "I knew what we were going to face. This doesn't surprise me at all, and I'm glad we came out on top."

HIGHLIGHTS
Glenn Moore on the game …
"We couldn't get it to fall at the right time. I thought we did good stuff though. Dari, of course, was very efficient. I don't know when she's thrown less than a hundred pitches. That's a good sign for needing her later in the weekend. We had some good at-bats, just couldn't get them to fall. Aliyah hits one hard. McKenzie starts the game off by smoking one off the wall that's out of any other park. We just can't seem to push them across. But we got enough. All we needed was one because of our defense and because of Dari, and we got that right in the nick of time."
Sydney Collazos on her game winning hit…
"It was awesome. We finally got some back-to-back hits to bring in a run because we have a lot of people on this roster hitting the ball hard, just not clicking with the back-to-back, so that was huge. It was nice, it felt good that it was me and be productive for my team."
Dariana Orme on tonight's performance…
"For me, I know the type of team I play with, and I know that as long I can keep going out there, we can get a zero on the board they're going to come around and put a run on the board for me. I trust them, I know they're going to get it done. Sometimes it does take a little bit longer, but I know at the end of the day they're going to get it done. So, it's a little easier to work with that"
