As dominant as Baylor pitcher Dariana Orme was all night, tossing a complete-game two-hitter, Glenn Moore was concerned about an escalating pitch count that topped 100 by the sixth inning.
Thing is, Orme wasn't. After throwing 142 pitches in Tuesday's 2-1, nine-inning win over UTA, the Baylor sophomore ace threw 117 more on Friday to outduel Tech's Kendall Fritz in a 1-0, series-opening win over Texas Tech at Getterman Stadium.
"Whenever I'm in the circle, I'm not even thinking about how many pitches I've thrown. I'm like, go pound the zone for the team," said Orme, who improved to 11-10 in lowering her ERA to 2.86. "It is so mental. I really don't want to know (my pitch count). I can throw 200 pitches and still get a (win), so it doesn't really matter at the end of the day."
While this was arguably Orme's best in a Baylor uniform, striking out five while giving up just two hits and one walk, Moore said she can take her game "to another level" when she figures out how to "get rid of batters quicker and not go so deep in the count."
"Putting up zeroes, it's hard to ask any more out of her," Moore said. "Early on, I thought she was throwing too many pitches. I'm always like that. I'm highly critical of throwing three-ball counts, although she doesn't walk many. She does come back."
That's what Orme did the few times Tech even came close to threatening. In the fifth, when the Red Raiders (21-22, 4-9) got two runners on base with one out, she came back to strike out Riley Love and get Arriana Villa on a liner to left.
And then in the fifth, when Tech got a runner to third base for the first time, shortstop Aliyah Binford caught Ellie Bailey's pop-up to shallow left field and then threw out Riley Ehlen on a sharp grounder.
Asked what was working for her, Orme answered, "I think my defense."
"There were some times we would fall short, but then they would let me know that they're going to get me the next one if I can roll in another one," she said. "Knowing that I could trust my pitches, throwing something and allow the team to put bat on ball enough for my team to just make an out helps you out a lot. It really does help."
Fritz (12-8) was equally impressive in the circle, giving up an unearned run on three hits and two walks while facing just four batters over the minimum in six innings.
"We watched tons of film on her. I thought she threw one of her better games tonight," Moore said of the Tech ace, a transfer from Nevada. "I thought our hitters were pretty decent, so I'll tip my hat to her."
Baylor (24-18, 3-7), a season-high six games over .500, threatened in the bottom of the second. Binford drew a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third on Sydney Collazos' single to right.
Moore said he threw up the stop sign at third base because Binford "got a bad jump."
"I don't know if she knew where the outfielder was," Moore said. "When I saw that, in my mind, I thought it was going to be hard for her to score. So, I thought the right decision was made."
Fritz got out of trouble when Zadie LaValley popped up to second base on a hit-and-run that saw Collazos thrown out easily at first base on an inning-ending 4-3 double play.
The Bears finally broke through with a run in the fourth. After a two-out single, Josie Bower stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch after a Binford walk.
"We were opportunistic," Moore said, "and we haven't had that a whole lot this year. Once we finally got a runner on third base, we'll take it. It's all about wins right now. We needed to get the W."
Baylor goes for its second-straight conference series win with Saturday's 2 p.m. game. The Bears have won four in a row and seven of their last eight.
"I definitely feel like everything is coming together," said Orme, who will likely come back to start Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale. "We've already meshed together, so now it's just putting it all together on the field. I think we're peaking at the right time."
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – Baylor softball shut out Texas Tech, 1-0, Friday night in the series opener at Getterman Stadium.
The Bears rallied behind starting pitcher Dariana Orme, who pitched her second complete game in a matter of four days, as she held the Red Raider offense to just two hits while striking out five.
As three Bears recorded hits tonight, the first came in the bottom of the first when Ana Watson laid down a perfect bunt to the pitcher. Sydney Collazos singled in the next inning, moving Aliyah Binford over to third after she walked and stole second.
After Baylor threatened in the second, both teams were retired in order in the third before a run in the fourth inning gave the Bears the 1-0 advantage. Josie Bower singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Red Raiders before Binford walked to put runners on the corners. Bower came home on a wild pitch and scored the only run of the night.
Texas Tech had chances again in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Bears capitalized off of Orme's pitching and the defense to hold the Red Raiders scoreless.
