When Baylor softball is at its best, like it was Sunday afternoon when it held top-ranked Oklahoma scoreless for 6 2/3 innings, the Bears can compete with anyone.
But, in Friday's series opener against sixth-ranked Oklahoma State, they made a couple costly errors, failed to come through with clutch two-out hits and never got a good handle on OSU starting pitcher Miranda Elish.
The Cowgirls (26-6, 4-0) scored in four of the first six innings and won its ninth-straight, beating Baylor, 6-1, Friday night at Getterman Stadium.
Starter Dariana Orme (6-9) walked the first two batters in a two-run fourth inning "and put herself in a bind," said Baylor coach Glenn Moore, whose team fell to 17-15 overall and 0-4 in the Big 12, "but we made some mistakes early that we really didn't recover from."
OSU freshman Brianna Evans beat out an infield single to shortstop to open the game and came around to score when Kiley Naomi doubled down the right-field line and rightfielder Ana Watson threw the ball away.
"We need to play a clean game against these teams," Moore said. "These teams are where they are in the polls for a reason, they're good. They're going to capitalize on mistakes. That was our Achilles' heel early in the season, and we made a few of them tonight. I didn't think we came out as energized as we needed to in a big game like that. I expect to change that (Saturday)."
Naomi was initially ruled out on a close play at the plate when Katelynn Carwille hit a comebacker to the circle, but the call was overturned when video replay showed that she beat the throw home and scored to make it 2-0.
The Bears got a run back in the bottom of the second, when Josie Bower led off with a triple into the right-field corner and scored on Watson's two-out single through the right side.
Watson, who got another hit with a slap single to left-center field in the fifth, said Elish was "working more outside rise balls the second go-around through the lineup."
"I decided my slapping was going to do better, to be on top of the ball," said Watson, who had two of Baylor's six hits.
Orme retired eight-straight batters before giving up back-to-back two-out hits by Carwile and Julie Cottrill in the top of the third to answer Baylor's run.
The Cowgirls plated two more in the fourth, when Chyenne Factor and Sydney Pennington walked to lead off the inning and scored on a Karli Petty single and Evans' sacrifice fly to left-center. Orme was charged with another unearned run in the sixth on a one-out error and Chelsea Alexander's sacrifice fly.
"They're a great lineup, as we know, and I thought (Orme) got a lot of good results," Moore said. "We fought hard, but I thought her performance was pretty good considering the lineup we were facing."
Settling in after allowing a second-inning run, Elish (8-4) retired eight in a row and 13 of 14 batters to take a 6-1 lead into the seventh
"We took a lot of strikes that we could have used in our favor, for a better outcome," Watson said. "But, I think (Saturday), we need to come back more aggressive in the box, and we'll be fine."
The Bears threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with a leadoff double by Aliyah Binford, an infield single by Zadie LaValley and Elish hitting Watson on her right elbow on an inside pitch. But, Wilson flied out to shallow left and Taylor Strain struck out for the third time with the potential tying run in the on-deck circle.
"We always fight, we never give up," Watson said. "They were finding the holes offensively We're hitting the ball great, we've just got to find the holes as well."
Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday and will be televised by ESPN, followed by the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
"We've never thrown in the towel this year," Moore said. "I expect us to make a stab at it, and we did. But, when the deficit is that big, it's hard to overcome. You're not going to overcome it often against pitching like they have."
