Casie Maxwell certainly didn't do anything to protect her 10th-ranked Baylor equestrian team.
In a schedule akin to a football team playing Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson, the Bears (0-3, 0-1) opened with road meets at Georgia, South Carolina and defending national champion Oklahoma State and will now host No. 1 TCU (3-0, 0-0) at 12 p.m. Friday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.
"Sometimes, you hope you have a little bit of a softer home opener," Maxwell said. "But since I've been at Baylor, our team has never had the opportunity to go to Georgia or South Carolina. That's where the opportunity presented itself, so we took advantage. You're going to play them at some point, so why not start with them?"
Now, out of the frying pan and into the fire, the Bears face a TCU team that moved up to the No. 1 spot in the poll after beating then-No. 2 Texas A&M in a raw-point tiebreaker in a 10-10 tie at College Station. The Frogs also have wins over No. 9 UT-Martin and Delaware State.
"This is probably our toughest four-meet start to the season that we've had, at least since I've been here," Maxwell said. "These teams are on fire. This is the caliber of teams we're going to see in the postseason. No need to protect our team. They have a really big opportunity here to come home and be in their home arena and have their entire team behind them and have a big win this week. They're certainly capable of it."
Ranked seventh in the preseason, Baylor fell to No. 8 after tight losses at South Carolina and Georgia – who are now fifth and seventh, respectfully. The Bears are coming off a 17-3 loss at No. 4 Oklahoma State, but 11 of the Cowgirls' 17 head-to-head wins were decided by three or fewer points.
"The score certainly doesn't reflect how well and how confident they rode," Maxwell said. "I know it's discouraging to them, I know it's discouraging on paper. But overall, we had a lot of riders who came out and really made Oklahoma State play last weekend and really came out in the first half and set a strong tone."
Senior Maddie Vorhies, who posted the second-highest fences score with an 86-point ride, said it was a "tough loss" against OSU, "and I think we learned a lot from it."
"We kind of figured out where our mistakes were, so we've definitely taken this week and continue to take this week to figure out what went wrong at OSU and how to prevent what happened from happening again," she said. "I think it was definitely a huge learning curve."
Other than riding on their own horses, the advantage of being at home is having the rest of the team cheering on the competing riders. With 61 riders, Baylor has one of the largest equestrian teams in the country.
"It's such a huge confidence booster," Vorhies said. "I can't tell you how many girls have come up to me and just tell me how great I am and how I'm just ready to do it. . . . We take a lot of pride in how loud we are. If you're not losing your voice, you're doing it wrong."
Senior Elsie Naruszewicz, who lost by a half-point with a 76.5-point horsemanship ride, said riding on their horses "gives us a lot of confidence."
"We know what they can do really well," she said. "And we just know where to push it, which makes our rides a lot more fun for us."
Baylor leads the all-time series with TCU, 24-9, but split two meetings last season. The Bears knocked off TCU, 14-6, in Fort Worth and dropped a 9-9 raw-score tiebreaker in Waco.
"We love going up against TCU." Vorhies said. "Them coming in at No. 1 is a great opportunity for us. Coming back from losing to No. 4 (Oklahoma State), it will definitely be a huge confidence boost for us to go up against No. 1. (TCU) is a strong team, and we're going to have to really push to edge them out."
Friday's meet is Baylor equestrian's "Go Gold" event, with fans encouraged to wear gold. Additionally, gold rally towels and "Beat TCU" buttons will be distributed to fans.
Baylor closes out its fall schedule with a road meet against No. 2 SMU (1-0) on Nov. 4 and a home meet against Fresno State (0-2) on Nov. 18.
WACO, Texas – No. 10 Baylor equestrian (0-3, 0-1) takes on No. 1 TCU (3-0, 0-0) Friday at 12 p.m. at the Willis Family Equestrian Center in Waco.
BU opens its home slate with a familiar Big 12 foe, as the two sides will face off for the 34th time in program history. Fans are encouraged to wear gold as part of Baylor's "Go Gold" campaign at each sport's first home conference contest of the season. Rally towels and "Beat TCU" buttons will be given away at the meet.
The Bears are coming off a loss at No. 4 Oklahoma State in which Madaline Callaway (Reining) and Annie Vorhies (Flat) each picked up Most Outstanding Performer honors. Callaway improved to 3-0 in her event, while Vorhies set a career high with a 90 in her Flat debut.
Vorhies also carries a 2-1 mark in Fences, her other Jumping Seat event, while Dominika Silvestri (Flat) and Daisy Kaufman (Reining) also post above-.500 records on the season. Jessica Batton (Reining) joins Callaway and Vorhies as the only remaining undefeated Bears in a particular event this year.
Under sixth-year head coach Casie Maxwell, BU is 18-8 all-time in home meets, including a 7-5 mark in home conference contests. The Bears went 3-3 in Waco last season, with a pair of ranked wins over No. 5 Texas A&M and No. 6 Fresno State.
Baylor leads the all-time series, 24-9, over TCU. However, the two sides have split the last six matchups since the start of the 2019-20 campaign. Last season, BU collected a 14-6 win at TCU, but dropped a 9-9 tiebreaker via a raw-score formula to the Horned Frogs in Waco.
TCU climbed to No. 1 in the polls this season after defeating then-No. 2 Texas A&M via a tiebreaker in its season opener. The Horned Frogs then topped UT Martin and Delaware State in a doubleheader last time out on Oct. 13.
Live scoring will be available for the meet and can be found here.
Baylor rounds out its fall schedule with two November meets, first at No. 2 SMU on Friday, Nov. 4, then by hosting Fresno State on Friday, Nov. 18, in Waco.
