GULFPORT, Miss. - No. 24 Baylor softball (10-3) followed up back-to-back no-hitters on Friday with two more gems, a combined two-hit effort from Kelsee Selman and Abby Langkamp to down Mississippi Valley State, followed by a one-hitter, shutout by senior ace Heather Stearns defeating #23 Mississippi State to close the second day at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic.
BU opened the day facing Mississippi Valley State, with Selman (2-2) taking the circle for the Lady Bears.
Selman would go three innings of near-perfect work, striking out six and allowing just one baserunner on a walk.
Abby Langkamp worked the final two innings in relief, striking out three batters, her first in a BU uniform.
The Baylor bats continued to tear open opposing pitching, notching 17 hits and posting 11 runs.
Sarah Smith provided the highlight of the game, emptying a bases-loaded situation with a triple into the right-center gap, scoring three.
Shelby Friudenberg chalked up another home run, her third of the season and the 21st of her Baylor career.
The late game pitted the 24th-ranked Lady Bears against No. 23 Mississippi State.
Stellar pitching stole the show again, with Heather Stearns (4-1) going the distance on a complete game, one-hit shutout, striking out nine batters in seven innings of work.
Four of the seven innings, MSU managed to get a runner in scoring position, but each time Stearns would seize the moment and come up big for the Lady Bears.
Sydney Christensen got the offense rolling, crushing a two-run shot to left-center, putting the Lady Bears up 2-0 in the bottom of the second.
In the fourth frame, Caitlin Charlton managed to reach on a fielding error by the second baseman, scoring Jessica Tomchesson to put BU up 3-0.
Smith had another big game at the plate, driving her fourth home run of the season in almost the identical spot as Christensen, giving Baylor a 4-0 run to close out the game.
