WACO, Texas - No. 21 Baylor softball (4-1) opened the Getterman Classic weekend tournament with a pair of strong outings, downing Liberty (3-5), 5-0, and Northwestern State (6-3), 10-0 (5) to open the round-robin first round.
In the early afternoon game with Northwestern State, Heather Stearns was in the circle, picking up her first win of the season with 4.0 innings of shutout work, adding five strikeouts.
After building a 3-0 lead with runs in each of the first three innings, the Lady Bears exploded in the fourth frame, dropping seven runs to build a 10-0 lead that would stand as the final.
Caitlin Charlton started off the inning with a walk, followed by a single from Robin Landrith, and a HBP from Riley Browder. With the bases loaded, Jessica Tomchesson legged out an infield single to the pitcher, scoring Charlton and keeping the bases juiced.
Jessie Scroggins just barely missed beating out a throw to first, scoring Landrith, and leaving two runners in scoring position.
Lindsey Cargill extended what would be a remarkable day at the plate, picking up her third hit of the game, in as many at-bats and scoring Browder.
Shelby Friudenberg picked up a walk, setting up Linsey Hays for a deep sac fly to left field, the 11th of her career, setting a new Baylor record.
Sarah Smith reached on an error by Lady Flames shortstop Sarah Robertson, brining Charlton back up to drive in two runs with a single up the middle.
In the afternoon game, it was a pitchers' battle through four, with neither BU's Kelsee Selman or Liberty's Julia DiMartino giving much of an opportunity.
Working a no-hitter through the first three frames, Selman was dealing, allowing just two hits in 6.0 innings of work. The Lady Bears finally broke through in the fourth, with Smith banging a double to the gap in left center field.
Charlton drew a walk, bringing Landrith to the plate. Landrith launched a ball just inches away from clearing the fence in right field, driving in Browder and putting BU up 1-0.
In the fifth, BU closed the door, putting the first two runners on and working a two-out rally. Smith came through clutch again, driving in a run and advancing to second on a sloppy throw.
Charlton drove a double into the right-field gap, clearing the bases and advancing to third on a fielding error by Robertson. Landrith picked up her second RBI of the game, putting the Lady Bears up 5-0 to clinch the second game of the day.

TOP QUOTE #1
"Coming out on that first game and executing in every inning, we just carried that out the whole day. Anything else than winning is not acceptable to us." -shortstop Caitlin Charlton
TOP QUOTE #2
"[We had] a little better performance today, than we did last weekend. We certainly had a great week of practice, every day was a very focused day. Pitching was phenomenal, it is hard to lose games when you don't give up runs. [Heather Stearns] threw really well, threw in spite of a big blister on her finger. Kelsee Selman was challenged to clean it up, a little rough around the edges last week, which was kind of accepted. But she had some moments where she looked great last week, as well. Today, they cleaned it up and looked more polished." -head coach Glenn Moore
