THE RUNDOWN
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. â '¬" Baylor men's golf is in second place after the two rounds of play at the season-opening Gopher Invitational. The Bears shot 16-over-par 584 over 36 holes on Sunday, placing them 11 strokes back of Oklahoma entering Monday's final round at Windsong Farm Golf Club.
Second round play was suspended due to darkness with three groups still on the course, and they will complete their rounds starting at 7:30 a.m. CT Tuesday. Final round pairings will be set following the completion of the second round.
Baylor was in sixth place after shooting 8-over-par 292 in the first round, but BU used a second-round of 8-over 292 to jump ahead of California (+18), Kent State (+21), Iowa State (+21) and Charlotte (+23). The Bears (+16) are two strokes in front of third-place Charlotte and five shots in front of fourth-place Kent State and Iowa State.
Baylor has three players in the top 15 individually. Senior Andreas Gjesteby is in a tie for ninth place after shooting 2-over 144 with matching rounds of 72. Freshman Garrett May is also tied for ninth place at 2-over 144 following rounds of 70 and 74, and junior transfer Hunter Shattuck is tied for 14th at 4-over 146 with rounds of 74 and 72. Frederik Andersen shot 76-74 and is tied for 33rd place at 8-over 150, and Braden Bailey is tied for 67th at 16-over 158 after shooting 81-77.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Garrett May, a true freshman from Hope, Ark., shot 1-under-par 70 in his first collegiate round. He was one of only six players in the 81-player field to break par in the tournament's opening round.
• All three Big 12 Conference teams are in the top five, with Oklahoma leading, Baylor in second place and Iowa State in fifth.
• Andreas Gjesteby and May are tied for ninth in par-3 scoring at even-par 3.00.
• Hunter Shattuck leads the team and is tied for 12th in par-4 scoring at 3-over 4.14.
• Gjesteby is tied for sixth in par-5 scoring at 3-under 4.50.
• May made eight birdies over 36 holes, second-most in the field behind Kent State's Ian Holt with nine.
• Gjesteby made six birdies, tied for seventh-most in the field, and Shattuck had five birdies.
• Gjesteby and Frederik Andersen are tied for the team lead with 23 pars, tied for 15th-most in the field.
