COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 12 Missouri (28-5, 7-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and held on for the 7-0 win over No. 17 Baylor (22-11, 1-6) on Sunday afternoon at University Field.
"We had a very unforgiving beginning to our Big 12 schedule," head coach Glenn Moore. "All I asked of our team was to keep fighting. Even though the outcome wasn't good, they did that today."
Courtney Repka (10-6) took the loss, going 4.1 innings, allowing five hits, four runs, three earned and two walks. Liz Paul added 1.2 innings of work, giving up three hits, three runs, two walks and striking out one.
Holly Holl's two-out single in the first notched the first hit of the day, and a wild pitch advanced her to second base, but a Kelsi Kettler groundout ended the threat. Holl has now hit safely in six-consecutive games.
Jenna Marston led off the bottom of the first with a walk, but Repka got Corrin Genovese to hit a grounder to short that was flipped over to second for the first out and fired over to first, only to see the umpire make a close safe call. Nicole Hudson then doubled to left for the first run and a two-out Kelsea Roth home run to left field made it 3-0. Lindsey Muller singled to left, but an errant throw into the infield caused a two-base error for the four-run deficit.
An RBI-single, bases loaded walk and fielder's choice RBI gave Missouri a seven-run lead.
Baylor's pitchers retired the final nine Missouri batters to keep the deficit at seven, but the offense managed just one hit the rest of the way.
Chelsea Thomas (14-3) got the win, allowing two hits and walking two to go with 10 strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
The Lady Bears will next be in action on Tuesday, April 3 against Stephen F. Austin for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
