WACO, Texas - The No. 23 Baylor softball team (22-13, 3-3) used a seven-run sixth inning to blast past Kansas (16-22, 0-7), 8-0 Saturday afternoon at Getterman Stadium. The Lady Bears wore pink uniforms for Power In Pink Day in support of the fight against breast cancer.
Jordan Vannatta led the way with two RBI and a pair of doubles, going 2-for-3, while Megan Turk went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. In all, 10 different BU players registered a hit on the day.
"We finally broke through offensively," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Courtney Repka continues to keep us in games, and I am proud that our offense finally gave her the support she deserves."
Courtney Repka (15-8) pitched another gem, recording her fourth complete-game shutout of the season, allowing just two hits, two walks and striking out seven over 6.0 innings.
Baylor got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as Turk laced a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on a bunt single from KJ Freeland. Kathy Shelton came in to pinch run for Turk and scored on an RBI-double from Tiffany Wesley that was inches from clearing the right field wall.
With the score still 1-0, the Lady Bears busted the game wide open and ended it in the sixth. Shelton led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a single from Freeland. Nicole Wesley singled to bring home Shelton, and Vannatta ripped her second double of the game for a pair of RBI and a 4-0 lead. The second pitching change of the day for the Jayhawks was greeted with an RBI-single from Bree Hanafin, followed by the same from Kayce Walker. With Hanafin on third, Walker got in a rundown between first and second, allowing Hanafin to cross the plate for a 7-0 advantage. With two-outs, Sydney Wilson launched a pinch-hit double over the center fielder's head, and advanced to third on a single from Turk. Kelsi Kettler came in to pinch hit and promptly took a two-strike pitch to right field for an RBI, ending the game early, 8-0.
Alex Jones (5-5) took the loss for KU, going 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, one run, walking two and striking out one.
BU's 15 hits were the most since collecting 17 against Prairie View A&M on March 2. It marked the most in a conference game since April 26, 2009 when the Lady Bears had 17 at Kansas.
Baylor will wrap up the series with Kansas on Sunday beginning at noon. The Lady Bears' pink jerseys will still be available to be bid on, and prior to the game, Baylor will honor former All-American Chelsi Lake.
