Trailing 1-0, the No. 24 Baylor softball team (18-7) used a four-run fourth inning to defeat South Alabama (11-11) 6-3, Thursday evening at Getterman Stadium.
"We started out slow again tonight, but Repka kept us in it," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We spread the hits around, but we are going to need to have players step up this weekend."
Courtney Repka (11-4) earned the win, going 5.2 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, two walks and three strikeouts. Alicia Vasquez came on in the sixth and lasted 1.1 innings, giving up four hits, two earned runs and one strikeout.
No Baylor player recorded more than one hit, as seven different players made up the seven hits. Megan Turk tied a season high with three RBI, all coming on a three-run shot, her second of the season.
USA took the lead in the first, as back-to-back two-out doubles put the Jaguars up 1-0.
The score remained the same until the fourth, when the Lady Bears busted out for four runs. Dani Leal walked and reached second on a fielder's choice, as the throw from shortstop was wild, putting runners on first and second with one out. Kathy Shelton stepped up and delivered a double down the right field line, scoring Leal and putting Kayce Walker at third. That set up the three-run bomb over the left field fence from Turk for a 4-1 lead.
Baylor added another run in the fifth, as Jordan Vannatta reached on a one-out double to left center, allowing Courtney Nieten to drive her in with a double to left center for a 5-1 advantage.
The Lady Bears' pitching kept the Jaguars' bats at bay, allowing just one hit from the second inning through the sixth, including no hits in four-straight innings.
BU put the lead at five in the sixth with a chopper by Tiffany Wesley over the head of the first baseman allowed Shelton to score from second.
USA cut the Baylor lead in half in the top of the seventh, as four-straight one-out singles against Vasquez made the score 6-2. Repka reentered the game and allowed one sac-fly RBI and got a pop out to end the game at 6-3.
Baylor will host No. 6 Florida in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
