WACO, Texas - The No. 25 Baylor softball team (5-4) split a pair of games, defeating Tulsa (3-6 overall) 9-1 (5) and falling to UTEP (6-3 overall) 3-2 Saturday on Day two of the QTI Getterman Classic. Three of the Lady Bears' four losses this season have come by one run.
"We would have like to get two wins tonight," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Courtney Repka started to wear down in game two, but we still had kids up with chances to score, we just couldn't execute."
Courtney Nieten totaled five RBI, while Kayce Walker registered four hits on the afternoon, as each player has a four-game hitting streak.
Game One
No. 25 BU 9, Tulsa 1 (5)
The Lady Bears scored runs in every inning, totaling 11 hits, en route to a 9-1 win in five innings over Tulsa in game one.
Kayce Walker and Nicole Wesley each went 3-for-3, while Courtney Nieten drove in four runs in the afternoon tilt.
Courtney Repka picked up the win, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run, one walk and two strikeouts.
Baylor loaded the bases in the first, as Tiffany Wesley and Walker both singled, while Jordan Vannatta walked. Nieten brought Wesley home with a sac fly, and with two outs, N. Wesley hit a two-RBI single to right center for a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Bears added three more in the second, with Walker and KJ Freeland each reaching on infield singles, allowing Nieten to hit a towering blast over the left field wall for a three-run home run, her second of the season.
Tulsa added a run in the third, but BU answered right back with a pair of its own in the bottom of the inning. N. Wesley led off with a single, followed by a walk from Megan Turk. The duo then pulled off the double steal to bring both runners in scoring position, allowing T. Wesley to hit an RBI-single for a 7-1 lead. Walker then delivered an RBI-single of her own to bring the advantage to 8-1.
N. Wesley added her third RBI of the day, tying a career high, on a single to center that brought home Bree Hanafin and brought the Baylor lead to eight in the bottom of the fourth.
Game Two
UTEP 3, No. 25 BU 2
Baylor couldn't make its 2-0 lead hold up, stranding nine runners on the night, as UTEP came from behind to defeat the Lady Bears, 3-2 in the program's first ever meeting.
No Lady Bears had more than one hit, while the Miners recorded four doubles on the night, including two from Chelsea Troupe.
Baylor jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. T. Wesley singled to begin the inning and moved over to second on a fielder's choice. Vannatta then bunted for a single to load the bases for Nieten, who grounded to short for the RBI. Hanafin then dropped a bunt of her own, squeezing Walker from third for a 2-0 advantage.
UTEP began to chip away at the lead in the bottom half of the inning, as a single to short brought Moore in from third to cut the BU advantage to one.
The Miners tied the game in the fourth with an RBI-double, and took the lead in the fifth with an two-out single from Ashley Ellis.
Baylor stranded runners in six of the seven innings, as BU's comeback attempt fell short.
The Lady Bears will be back in action Sunday to wrap up the tournament, taking on UT Arlington at 1:00 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
