HOUSTON - The No. 15 Baylor softball team (1-3) dropped a pair of one-run games, falling 4-3 to No. 14 Ohio State and 6-5 to No. 21 Louisville on Saturday at the Marriott Hobby Houston Classic.
Game One
No. 14 OSU 4, No. 15 BU 3
Baylor let a 3-0 lead evaporate, as two runs from the Buckeyes in the top of the seventh clipped the Lady Bears 4-3 in the first game.
Whitney Canion (0-2) took the loss after going 7.0 innings, allowing nine hits, three earned runs, three walks and 13 strikeouts.
Baylor posted three early runs in the second after a leadoff single by Tiffany Wesley. Wesley stole second, reached third on a wild pitch and scored when Kelsi Kettler reached on a fielder's choice. With runners at second and third, Kathy Shelton hit a dribbler to the pitcher who overthrew home allowing two runs to score for a 3-0 lead.
Ohio State began to chip away at the lead, beginning with a home run from Marder in the top of the third.
The Lady Bears had runners at second and third with one down in the bottom of the third, but pinch runner Mallory Craig was thrown out at home and Dani Leal grounded out to third to end the threat.
The Buckeyes' Rachael Shepherd hit a home run of her own to lead off the top of the sixth to cut the Baylor lead to just one.
With the score 3-2, Ohio State took the lead back on a single through the right side, allowing Cooper to score from second, however a misplay in right allowed Goodchild to score from first for a 4-3 lead.
The Lady Bears went in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Game Two
No. 21 UL 6, No. 15 BU 5
The Lady Bears fell behind 6-0, but scored five unanswered runs to cut the lead to one, however, BU could not complete the comeback for a 6-5 loss.
Louisville got an RBI-sac fly Brittany York in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
Two errors and a pair of RBI-singles stretched the lead to 4-0 in the third, and a two RBI single in the fourth extended it to 6-0.
Baylor battled back in the top of the fifth, with a leadoff single from Courtney Nieten, followed by a Tiffany Wesley walk. With one out, freshman Kelsi Kettler belted her first career home run to cut the Cardinals lead in half, 6-3.
The home runs weren't done, however, because with one out, Bree Hanafin and Jordan Vannatta hit back-to-back solo shots to bring BU back to within one.
That's all the closer Baylor would get, as the Lady Bears dropped their second one-run game of the day.
Courtney Repka (1-1) took the loss, going 6.0 innings, allowing nine hits, three earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
Baylor will next be in action on Sunday, taking on Houston at 1:00 p.m.
