HOUSTON - The No. 15 Baylor softball team (1-1) split a pair of games during the opening day of the Marriott Hobby Houston Classic on Friday as the Lady Bears dropped a 4-1 extra-inning contest to No. 21 Louisville before rebounding with an 8-0 win over Sam Houston State.
Game One
No. 21 UL 4, No. 15 BU 1 (8)
No. 21 Louisville used four unanswered runs, including three in the top of the eighth, to defeat No. 15 Baylor, 4-1 in game one Friday.
Whitney Canion (0-1) took the loss, going 8.0 innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs, one walk and 11 strikeouts.
Louisville threatened in the second, as Brittany York singled with one out, but Vanessa James popped into a 6-3 double play to end the inning.
Baylor began the bottom of the third with a walk by Dani Leal. Pinch runner Kathy Shelton stole second and KJ Freeland bunted her to third. Kayce Walker then grounded to the pitcher, who made an errant throw to first, allowing Walker to be safe. Walker was then picked off trying to get in a rundown and Bree Hanafin struck out with Shelton at third to end the inning.
The Lady Bears broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth, as Nicole Wesley led off the inning with a single to the pitcher. Wesley then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, and with one out, KJ Freeland laid down a bunt, squeezing Wesley in to score for a 1-0 lead.
Louisville tied the game in the sixth when Kristin Austin hit a grounder to the pitcher and it was overthrown, allowing Austin to get to second. Melissa Roth then singled to right center, allowing Austin to score and tie it at one.
The Cardinals grabbed their first lead of the game in the eighth inning, when Colby Wherry doubled to right center for a pair of RBI and a two-run lead. Brittany York added an RBI-single for a 4-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Game Two
No. 15 BU 8, SHSU 0
Courtney Repka (1-0) pitched a complete-game shutout in her first collegiate game, giving up just one hit, walking three and striking out six.
The Lady Bears got on the board first in the first inning on a Jordan Vannatta single that scored Kathy Shelton, who singled and was sacrificed to second by Bree Hanafin.
Baylor stretched its lead in the third, scoring a pair of runs with two outs. Shelton got hit by a pitch and stole second to get into scoring position. Hanafin then reached on an error by the pitcher allowing Shelton to reach third. A wild pitch followed that allowed Shelton to score for a 2-0 lead. Vannatta stretched the lead to three with an RBI-single up the middle that scored Hanafin for a 3-0 advantage.
The Lady Bears continued to extend the lead in the fifth with Kayce Walker leading off by reaching on an error. After stealing second and reaching third on a throwing error by the catcher, Hanafin doubled down the left field line to bring Walker in to score. Jordan Vannatta then stepped up and drilled a home run over left center for a two-run shot and a 6-0 lead.
