ANN ARBOR, Mich. - A four-run third inning by No. 6 Michigan (46-10) proved to be too much for Baylor (40-22) as the Wolverines defeated the Lady Bears, 7-1 in the NCAA Super Regional Saturday afternoon at the Wilpon Complex in Ann Arbor. The loss ends the season for Baylor, as Michigan advances to the Women's College World Series.
"It's a tough way to end the season," head coach Glenn Moore said. "I can't say enough about the job this team did to get to this point, and I have never had a team with more heart than this group."
Baylor got off to a good start in the bottom of the second, as Courtney Oberg sent a one-out, first pitch over the left field wall for her sixth home run of the season, giving BU a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines answered back in the top of the third with four runs on five hits to go with one Baylor error off starter Shaina Brock (7-3) who made her first start since March 31 at North Texas.
Three more runs plated for Michigan in the fourth, as a two-RBI double and a squeeze bunt scored three runs for the Wolverines, two of which were credited to reliever Brittany Turner.
Baylor tried to answer in the bottom of the inning, as a leadoff walk by Reagan followed by an Alex Colyer single put runner at first and second with no outs. But Oberg struck out, and pinch runner Sophia Lujan was thrown out stealing third for a double play. Pinch hitter, Sydney Wilson then struck out to end the inning.
The Lady Bears managed just three baserunners the rest of the way off Michigan pitcher Jordan Taylor, who went 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, two walks and 13 strikeouts for the win.
Brock went 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs, two earned, one walk and one strikeout. Turner came on and went 4.0 innings, giving up four hits, two runs, one earned, one walk and two strikeouts.
Baylor wrapped up its season with its fifth 40-plus win in school history, all during head coach Glenn Moore's nine years at the helm.
