ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan's Doraian Shaw hit three home runs and added six RBI to lead the No. 6 Wolverines (45-10) to an 8-1 win over Baylor (40-21) in the opening game of the NCAA Super Regional at the Wilpon Complex in Ann Arbor Friday night.
"We ran into a team that was playing unbelievable tonight" head coach Glenn Moore said. "We just didn't have it tonight, but this team has a lot of fight left and we will do that tomorrow."
Michigan scored six runs off home runs on the evening, as Maggie Viefhaus added a solo shot of her own.
The Wolverines added runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. With one out in the third, the bases were loaded and a walk by Whitney Canion plated one. But the freshman battled back to get to more outs to limit it to a 3-0 deficit.
The Lady Bears answered in the fourth, as Tiffany Wesley led off with a double and was brought around to score by a single from Bree Hanafin to make it 3-1.
Michigan loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning, but Canion got two fly outs and a groundout to strand the runners and keep the Wolverine lead to just two.
After Baylor went in order in the fifth, Shaw answered with a two-run blast to put the lead at four. Two more home runs from Viefhaus and Shaw put the game at 8-1, as Baylor used all four pitchers on the night.
Canion (27-17) took the loss after allowing six hits, three runs, two earned, four walks and one strikeout. Nikki Nimitz picked up the win throwing a complete-game three-hitter, allowing one run, one walk and eight strikeouts.
Baylor will play Michigan again on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT in an elimination game for the Lady Bears. Should BU win, they would play the Wolverines in the third and deciding game 30 minutes following the game.
