WACO - A two-out, RBI-single to center in the bottom of the 10th by Bree Hanafin led the Baylor softball team (33-16, 9-4) to a 4-3 win over Nebraska (29-13, 6-7) Saturday night at Getterman Stadium. The win marked the sixth time this season the Lady Bears have won in walk-off fashion.
Baylor outhit the Huskers 14-5, but stranded 13 runners on base during the game. The Lady Bears are now 3-1 in extra inning games, with two of those wins coming in Big 12 play.
Hanafin went 3-for-4 with an RBI, as she was one of five Baylor players with two or more hits.
Whitney Canion (21-12) tied her career high with 16 strikeouts, as she allowed just five hits, no earned runs and walked just two in 10 innings of work. The complete-game was her 28th of the season and the 16th 10-plus strikeout game of her career.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect in the bottom of the 10th and the Lady Bears trailing 3-2, Sydney Wilson was placed on second to pinch run for Courtney Oberg. Nicole Wesley then singled on a bunt to put runners on the corners. With one out, Meagan Weldon hit a sac fly to right field, scoring Wilson and tying the game. That set the stage for Hanafin, who laced a single over the center fielder's head, scoring Wesley for the 4-3 win.
With the score knotted at two and one out in the 10th, a passed ball got by Oberg, allowing Jamie Gay to cross the plate from third, giving Nebraska the 3-2 lead. With a runner at third, Canion struck out the next two batters to limit the damage.
Baylor jumped out early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. Kayce Walker singled and stole second to reach scoring position with two outs. Alex Colyer then laid down a bunt single to place runners at first and third, allowing Oberg to single Walker in for a 1-0 advantage. With N. Wesley reaching on a single to load the bases, Megan Turk delivered a single up the middle for an RBI a 2-0 lead.
Nebraska tied the game in the sixth, as a two-out throwing error on a grounder to third allowing a pair of runs to cross the plate, evening the contest.
Baylor will wrap up the series with the Huskers at noon on Sunday. The Lady Bears will honor its five seniors immediately following the game
