WACO - The Baylor softball team (9-3 overall) tallied 14 hits en route to a 9-4 win over Sam Houston State (6-6 overall) Saturday at Getterman Stadium. With the victory, the Lady Bears have won three-straight and nine of their last 10.
"It was good to see us jump out of the gates early," head coach Glenn Moore said. "It took some pressure off of us, and it was great to see our bats come alive."
Shaina Brock (2-1 overall) picked up the win, going 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs, three walks and two strikeouts. Tiffany Wesley led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Brette Reagan, who blasted her team-leading third home run, and Kayce Walker each went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
The Lady Bears produced two runs in the bottom of the first, as Walker hit a one-out single into right field and advanced all the way home after a throwing error by the third baseman was sent into right field on a fielder's choice by Brette Reagan. With Reagan at third, Courtney Oberg hit a sac fly to right, scoring Reagan for a 2-0 lead.
Baylor added another pair in the second with Jordan Vannatta leading off the inning with a walk. After a stolen base by Vannata, Bree Hanafin's single advanced her to third, setting up bases clearing double by T. Wesley for a 4-0 advantage.
The Bearkats got on the board in the fourth after the second double of the inning crossed a Sam Houston State runner over the plate, cutting the Baylor advantage to three.
The Lady Bears answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, beginning with Sydney Wilson's first career hit. With two outs, T. Wesley singled to place two runners on for Walker, who doubled down the left field line for a pair of RBI. Reagan came up to the plate and took a 2-1 pitch to left center for her third home run of the season, making the score 8-1.
Sam Houston State added one run in each of the remaining innings, and Baylor scored one more in the sixth when T. Wesley's second double of the game scored Vannatta.
Brittany Turner came on in relief, allowing just two hits and striking out three in 1.2 innings of work
