WACO, Texas - The Baylor softball team (8-3 overall) used a one-out single by Courtney Oberg in the bottom of the 10th to defeat Sam Houston State (6-5 overall) 2-1 Friday night at Getterman Stadium.
Freshman Whitney Canion (6-2 overall) registered the second-most strikeouts in a single game for Lady Bear pitcher, as she fanned 16 batters on the evening. Canion's performance was her fifth 10-plus strikeout game of the season, putting her third on the all-time career list behind Stacey Allison (7) and Cristin Vitek (13). Alex Colyer, Oberg and Meagan Weldon each recorded two-hit games for Baylor on the night.
"I am really proud of our team's effort tonight," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Whitney was fabulous again, and showed why she is one of the better pitchers we have had in this program."
Sam Houston State jumped on the board first as Morgan Mikulin delivered an RBI-single with two outs to take a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bears tried to answer in the first with Nicole Wesley hitting a single down the left field line with one away and stealing second to reach scoring position. Brette Reagan reached on a throwing error by the shortstop to put runners at first and second, but the next two Lady Bears were unable to bring them around to score.
A Hailey Wiginton single in the third would be the last baserunner the Bearkats would see for a while, as Canion retired the next six batters via strikeout.
Baylor rallied to answer in the fifth, as Weldon led off the inning with a double to left center. Megan Turk came to the plate and singled an 0-2 pitch to right, bringing around pinch runner, Sophia Lujan to score.
Baylor stranded a pair of runners in the sixth, as a groundout could not bring Reagan home from third.
Sam Houston State threatened in the seventh with a leadoff double to center. Amy Brown tried to sacrifice Calli Wood over to third, but a great play by Reagan at third held the runner and got the out at first. Mandy Gegen singled to advance Wood to third, but Canion struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
The Lady Bears had their chance to end it in the seventh with a Weldon walk leading off the inning. That brought Mikulin on in relief, and Bree Hanafin and Kayce Walker each singled to center to load the bases. N. Wesley lined a ball off the pitcher, who threw home in time to get pinch runner, Freeland, at home, and the catcher fired to third for the force, ending the inning.
In the bottom of the 10th, Reagan reached base with a walk, and Colyer singled to advance her to second. That brought Oberg to the plate, who hit blooped a single over the shortstop and into left field, allowing Reagan to score from second and give the Lady Bears the win.
Baylor will continue its series with Sam Houston State on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
