The Baylor Lady Bears (9-3 overall) used a two RBI single from KJ Freeland to come back and defeat San Diego State (11-4 overall), 7-5in the final game of the Palm Springs Classic on Sunday.
"I am happy to come out of here with the win," head coach Glenn Moore said. "I thought this was a very productive tournament for our ballclub and we are going to continue to get better from here."
San Diego State got on the board first in the top of the second, scoring two runs to take a 2-0 lead.
Baylor answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a three spot that came off three Aztec errors. With the bases loaded, Tiffany Wesley walked to bring in Danielle Honnette and Brette Reagan followed with a two RBI single to make the score 3-2.
Baylor manufactured another run in the fifth after pinch runner Morgan Craig stole second and forced a throw, allowing Kirsten Shortridge to score from third.
San Diego State retook the lead in the sixth, scoring three runs to take a 5-4 advantage.
Baylor would not be denied its ninth win, however, as the Lady Bears continued to put the pressure on the Aztecs. With two runners on, Freeland singled past the shortstop and advanced to third on the play, scoring Meagan Weldon and Tiffany Wesley. Freeland then scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Bears a 7-5 advantage.
Jenny Isham, who cam in relief of Brittany Turner, picked up her team-leading fifth win of the year after throwing 1.2 and giving up two runs. Turner got the no decision after pitching 5.1 innings and giving up four hits, two earned runs and striking out four.
Baylor will be back in action on Saturday to face Louisiana-Monroe in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. The two teams will finish the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
