The Baylor Lady Bears picked up a 6-4 win over UMass, but dropped a 12-0 decision to No. 9 Arizona on day two of the Palm Springs Classic.
Baylor jumped out on top in game one against UMass, scoring three runs in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Nicole Wesley grounded out to the second basemen to score Meagan Weldon. With two outs, Shortridge hit a chopper back to the pitcher, but a throwing error by Bailey Sanders advanced her to second and allowed Jordan Vannatta and Alex Colyer to score, giving the Lady Bears a 3-0 lead.
The Minutewomen scored in the bottom half of the second to cut the margin to two, but Brette Reagan began the third inning with a home run to left center, her first of the season. Colyer added to the Baylor lead with an RBI double to score Weldon and give the Lady Bears a 5-1 advantage.
UMass cut the Baylor lead to one in the bottom of the third as Jessica Serio doubled to clear the bases to make the score 5-4.
With the bases loaded in the fourth, Courtney Oberg grounded out to the second baseman to score Shortridge and make the margin a two run advantage for the Lady Bears.
Brittany Turner came on in the fifth to relieve Shortridge and threw flawlessly, giving up no hits, runs or walks and striking out one.
Shortridge threw four innings to pick, giving up just three hits and allowing four runs on four walks and five strikeouts.
Arizona led off game two with a home run by Lestrapes and never looked back, homering two more times in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The Wildcats scored four more times in the second, all with two outs, and added three more in the third and one final score in the fourth.
The Lady Bears loaded the bases with three singles in the top of the fifth, but were unable to get any runs across, ending the game.
Jenny Isham took the loss after giving up three earned runs in 0.1 innings of work. Turner came on in relief, pitching 1.1 innings and giving up five earned runs. Shaina Brock came on in the third inning and allowed three earned runs in 2.1 innings, striking out three.
Baylor will be back in action on Saturday to take on UCLA at 2:30 p.m. CT and Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m. CT.
