HOUSTON, Texas - The Baylor men's golf team holds a five-shot lead after the first day of competition at the Rice Intercollegiate. Play in round two was suspended due to darkness with the final pairing on the fairway of the finishing hole.
"We played really well in the morning round," said head coach Greg Priest. "We did a lot of good things in the first round. I thought that Colton (Williams) played great this morning. Everyone else did a good job of hanging in and shooting good scores."
Baylor shot 282 in the first round and held a four-stroke advantage over Memphis. The Bears fired 299 in the second round for a two-round total of 581. Memphis sits in second place after the first day, and is guaranteed of a two-round score of at least 586 following the completion of the second round on Tuesday morning.
"I thought that we just got a little tired in the second round," said Priest. "This was the first time that we played 36 holes in one day since early in the fall. I thought that we rebounded well in the middle of the round and finished well."
Colton Williams is tied for the overall lead at even-par through two rounds. Williams claimed the first-round lead at 5-under par, but struggled through the second round, carding a 77 over the second 18 holes.
Bill Allcorn and Wes Williams are tied for third at 1-over par through two rounds. Allcorn carded an opening round 70, while Williams shot 72-73 through 36 holes.
The second round will be completed on Tuesday morning, followed by re-seeding and the completion of the third round.
