WACO, Texas --- Baylor softball players Alex Colyer and Chelsi Lake have been named first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District VI, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday. With the selections, the pair is now eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America squad to be announced later this season.
Lake, a senior with a 3.41 GPA in political science, earns her second consecutive first-team academic all-district selection. The native of Keller, Texas, has been steady behind the plate for the Lady Bears this season as she is currently hitting .305 on the year with eight home runs and 41 RBI.
Colyer, a sophomore second baseman from Houston, Texas, earns her first selection to the academic all-district squad in her first year of eligibility for the award as the sophomore carries a 3.93 GPA in pre-med/health science studies. Colyer has had a breakout season for the Lady Bears as she is currently batting .302 on the season with five home runs and 17 RBI.
Baylor was only one of two schools (Oklahoma) to place at least two players on the academic all-district squad as the Lady Bears have placed at least two on the team for the last four seasons.
In order to be eligible for academic all-district honors, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a 4.00 scale and participate in at least 50 percent of his team's games. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible.
The pair of honors is likely the first of several for the Baylor softball team on Thursday as the post-season conference awards will be announced following the play-in games at the Big 12 Conference Championship on Thursday night.
Baylor, the No. 1 overall seed after claiming the Big 12 regular season title, will open play at the 2007 Big 12 Championship on Friday, May 11, at 1:30 p.m. when the Lady Bears face No. 8 Texas Tech or No. 9 Oklahoma State at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
